This Is What I Think.

Holy cow, Ray, it's a whole fleet of sissies.

Where's your outraged self-righteous outrage now, chump.

What's the matter? Am I not black enough for you?

William J. Clinton

XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Remarks on Presenting the Congressional Medal of Honor to Asian-American Heroes of World War II

June 21, 2000

Chaplain Hicks; distinguished Members of the Senate and the House who are here in large numbers; Secretary and Mrs. Cohen; Secretary and Mrs. West; Secretary Shalala; other members of the administration who are here, I thank all of you for being here on this profoundly important day.

In early 1945 a young Japanese-American of the 442d Regimental Combat Team lay dead on a hill in southern France—the casualty of fierce fighting with the Germans. A chaplain went up to pray over him, to bless him, to bring him back down. As the chaplain later said, "I found a letter in his pocket. The soldier had just learned that some vandals in California had burned down his father's home and barn in the name of patriotism. And yet, this young man had volunteered for every patrol he could go on."

Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.

The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.

Role in the Nazi state

When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.

World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.

Organization

The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels

Propaganda

Main article: Nazi propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.

Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."

Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

CLOSE-UP

VALOR IN A TIME OF INJUSTICE

By Bruce Dunford

The Associated Press

AFTER THE JAPANESE attack on Pearl Harbor, distrust of Asian Americans led America to herd many into camps. Yet, thousands made sacrifices to keep our nation free. More than 50 years later, Medals of Honor were bestowed on a select few.

HONOLULU - Dive bombers, torpedo planes and fighters bearing the "rising sun" emblem of the Japanese military were hammering Oahu's Army and Navy bases that Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941.

High-school senior Daniel Inouye was racing his bicycle through the streets of the Makiki neighborhood, heading to the Red Cross station where he volunteered as a first-aid trainer. He remembers cursing skyward at the Japanese.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1947

Sir Robert Robinson

Award Ceremony Speech

Presentation Speech by Professor A. Fredga, member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Your Majesty, Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen.

One of the principal aims of organic chemistry is to make clear the chemical structure of substances found in living nature. Interest has been directed particularly towards substances with vital functions or otherwise obvious qualities. The structure of simpler compounds was largely elucidated during the nineteenth century, the more complicated ones being reserved for our century. Sir Robert Robinson's exceedingly fruitful work treats many groups of such substances. In comprehensive investigations he has dealt with the anthocyans, a group of red, blue, or violet pigments found almost everywhere within the vegetable kingdom, and which we meet with in the cornflower and the lark-spur of the fields as well as in claret and beetroot. He has done important work on sex hormones and synthetic substances of less complicated structure but with similar properties. He has done pioneering work on synthetic drugs against malaria, he has contributed towards the investigation of penicillin and he has successfully attacked fundamental questions concerning the mechanism of organic-chemical reactions. In presenting him with this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Royal Academy of Sciences has in mind, however, particularly his work on alkaloids.

By alkaloids we understand a numerous group of nitrogenous basic substances from the vegetable kingdom. They usually have striking, sometimes sensational physiological effects. Among them are quinine, cocaine, and atropine, all of which have important medicinal qualities, further morphine, doubtless well-known, and strychnine known for its medicinal value and - in somewhat larger doses - as an exceedingly active poison. Plants containing alkaloids have generally drawn the attention of primitive peoples, and in the cases where they are met with in countries with ancient culture, the knowledge of their properties often goes back to pre-historic age. They have been used as medicines and means of enjoyment, for ritual and criminal purposes. They can carry our thoughts to poetry and romance - it is not only decadent poets who have sung the praise of opium and poppy juice - but they have also been associated with vice, crime and horror.

During the nineteenth century we began to learn how to isolate the active substances themselves, the alkaloids, and investigation of their chemistry still continues with unabated interest. It was soon found that these alkaloids are usually very complicated in structure; the molecule of morphine contains 40 atoms, that of strychnine 47, each of which has its definite place in relation to the others. To reveal the inner architecture of these complicated systems through different chemical operations is a task as difficult as it is fascinating. It requires great experimental skill, creative power and sharp logic. In this sphere of alkaloid research, Sir Robert stands out as our foremost contemporary. He has solved the riddle of the morphine molecule's structure, in connection with which quite 20 different formulae have been under consideration, he has clarified the essential features of the strychnine formula, even though some details are still uncertain, and he has made decisive contributions towards the investigation of many other alkaloids with strangely sounding names like gnoscopine, harmaline, physostigmine, and rutaecarpine.

It has often been asked how plants build up these singular molecules. Here, Sir Robert has formed a theory which rests upon the amino-acids contained in proteins, and which seems to present a satisfactory answer to the question. The theory is illustrated by Sir Robert's famous synthesis of tropinone, a substance closely related to cocaine. We have here a case where three rather simple molecules spontaneously unite into a complicated system, which earlier we could only build up step by step through a long series of reactions. We may suppose that here Sir Robert has found the key to nature's own way of working. This theory has also gained great importance as a guide when determining intricate structures, and it has rendered it possible to trace hidden connections within the multifarious group of alkaloidal substances.

The tendency in natural science tends more and more to the removal of the traditional boundaries between the different sciences. The sum of total knowledge constantly increases, human intellect, however, is limited and cooperation therefore becomes a matter of necessity. For the individual scientist it becomes a difficult task to broaden and deepen his science on its own particular basis without turning his back upon productive collaboration. Perhaps this is felt particularly in chemistry; it is there that the threads of research into life and matter run together, and thus chemistry has acquired a key position within the natural science of to-day. Sir Robert has solved the problem with great success. He has devoted his life to organic chemistry, but the importance and the consequences of his work extend far into the fields of biological and medicinal research.

Biosynthesis of cocaine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first synthesis and elucidation of the cocaine molecule was by Richard Willstätter in 1898. Willstätter's synthesis derived cocaine from tropinone. Since then, Robert Robinson and Edward Leete have made significant contributions to the mechanism of the synthesis.

1990 film "Jacob's Ladder" DVD video:

Michael Newman: So, first I'm arrested, right? Best LSD I ever made right down the drain. I figured, "This is it. Twenty years in the can if I'm lucky." That was 1968.

Jacob Singer: Long time ago.

Michael Newman: Really. Next thing I know, I'm on Riker's Island. Ever been there, man? Well, suddenly, they take me from my cell, they throw me in a waiting room with bank teller windows. Four army colonels with medals up their asses are standing on the other side. They say to me, if I come to Vietnam for two years, no action, just work in a lab, they'll drop all charges and wipe the record clean. I'd only been in jail thirteen hours. I knew 'Nam couldn't be any worse.

Jacob Singer: Shows how little you knew.

Michael Newman: Yeah, really. They had me by the balls. Next thing I know, I'm in Saigon. I'm working in a top-secret lab synthesizing mind-altering drugs. Not the street stuff. They had us isolating special properties - the dark side. They wanted a drug that increased aggressive tendencies. They were scared. They were worried. They figured you guys were too soft, not fighting up to your potential. They wanted something to stir you up, make you mad, you know, tap into your anger. And we did it. Most powerful thing I ever saw. Even a bad trip, and believe me, I've had my share, do not compare to the fury of The Ladder.

Jacob Singer: The Ladder?

Michael Newman: Yeah. That's what they called it. A fast trip straight down the ladder - right to the primal fear, right to the base anger. I'm telling you, man, it was powerful. I don't need to tell you. You already know. We did experiments on jungle monkeys. It worked. They bashed each other's heads in, gouged out their eyes, chewed off their tails. The brass loved it. Then they made us try it on Charlie. We, uh, took these POWs, you know? Just kids, really. And - we put them in this courtyard, and we fed them huge doses of the stuff. I mean, they were worse than the monkeys. I didn't know men could do those things. Anyway, there was this big offensive coming up, right? Everyone knew it - Time Magazine, Huntley, Brinkley - and the brass were scared because they knew we couldn't win. Morale was down, it was getting ugly in the States. You remember.

Jacob Singer: Yeah.

Michael Newman: So, a couple days later, they decide to use The Ladder on one test battalion - yours. Just an infinitesimal dose in the food supply, they said, just to prove its effectiveness in the field. They were sure your unit would have the highest kill ratio in the whole goddamn offensive, and they were right - you did - except not the way they thought.

Jacob Singer: No one can remember that night. I get flashes but they don't make sense. What happened? Was there an offensive?

Michael Newman: Yeah, a couple days later. It was fierce, but you guys never saw it.

Jacob Singer: But there was an attack? It was a fight, right?

Michael Newman: Yeah, but not with the Cong.

Jacob Singer: With who?

Michael Newman: You killed each other.

Jacob Singer: What?

Michael Newman: It was brother against brother. No discrimination. You tore each other to pieces.

Jacob Singer: My God.

Michael Newman: I knew it would happen. I warned them. I fucking warned them!

Jacob Singer: Oh, fuck.

Michael Newman: I was just some hippie chemist, right? What did I know?

Jacob Singer: Fuck.

Michael Newman: I talked to the guys who bagged the bodies. They were in worse shape than you, believe me. They saw what was left.

1960 U-2 incident

The 1960 U-2 incident occurred during the Cold War on May 1, 1960 (during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower) when an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. At first, the United States government denied the plane's purpose and mission, but was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft when the Soviet government produced its remains (largely intact) and surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

On May 7, Khrushchev sprang his trap and announced:

I must tell you a secret. When I made my first report I deliberately did not say that the pilot was alive and well… and now just look how many silly things [the Americans] have said.

Christmas Broadcast 2006

I have lived long enough to know that things never remain quite the same for very long. One of the things that has not changed all that much for me is the celebration of Christmas. It remains a time when I try to put aside the anxieties of the moment and remember that Christ was born to bring peace and tolerance to a troubled world.

The birth of Jesus naturally turns our thoughts to all new-born children and what the future holds for them. The birth of a baby brings great happiness - but then the business of growing up begins. It is a process that starts within the protection and care of parents and other members of the family - including the older generation. As with any team, there is strength in combination: what grandparent has not wished for the best possible upbringing for their grandchildren or felt an enormous sense of pride at their achievements?

Time travel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space. Time travel could hypothetically involve moving backward in time to a moment earlier than the starting point, or forward to the future of that point without the need for the traveler to experience the intervening period (at least not at the normal rate). Any technological device – whether fictional or hypothetical – that would be used to achieve time travel is commonly known as a time machine.

May 4, 2005, was the day I went to the Kent Police department for help. I named George W. Bush specifically as one of the people harassing me. The policeman didn’t ask me any questions. He dumped me off at the St. Francis hospital in Federal Way where the first thing they did was secretly drug my food. I found it very hard to restrain the urge to laugh shortly after I had eaten.

This Tacoma, WA, terrorism incident occurred on 11/20/05. I wonder if it is a deliberate variation of 11/2. I called the police again about this because I sensed someone was trying to connect to me somehow, but they didn’t give a shit. They didn’t even ask me any questions. I called them after I started living in that homeless shelter in Pioneer Square and I told the cop I thought that people were seeing me as some kind of informant, along with my suspicions about the terrorist, but he just brushed off my suspicions and told me that he thought no one thought I was an informant. That was the last time I called the police because all they did was take me to the hospital where I had to explain that I didn’t need their help. I needed the damn police to start doing their damn jobs. All I got from direct interaction was incompetence and the last time, passive aggressiveness.

Dr. Edward Morbius: It's a... It's an obsolete term. I'm afraid once used to describe the elementary basis of the subconscious mind.

Commander John J. Adams: [to himself] Monsters from the Id...

Dr. Edward Morbius: Huh?

Commander John J. Adams: Monsters from the subconscious. Of course. That's what Doc meant. Morbius. The big machine, 8,000 miles of klystron relays, enough power for a whole population of creative geniuses, operated by remote control. Morbius, operated by the electromagnetic impulses of individual Krell brains.

Dr. Edward Morbius: To what purpose?

Commander John J. Adams: In return, that ultimate machine would instantaneously project solid matter to any point on the planet, In any shape or color they might imagine. For *any* purpose, Morbius! Creation by mere thought.

Dr. Edward Morbius: Why haven't I seen this all along?

Commander John J. Adams: But like you, the Krell forgot one deadly danger - their own subconscious hate and lust for destruction.

Dr. Edward Morbius: The beast. The mindless primitive! Even the Krell must have evolved from that beginning.

Commander John J. Adams: And so those mindless beasts of the subconscious had access to a machine that could never be shut down. The secret devil of every soul on the planet all set free at once to loot and maim. And take revenge, Morbius, and kill!

Dr. Edward Morbius: My poor Krell. After a million years of shining sanity, they could hardly have understood what power was destroying them.

This reminds me of the last time I called the police for assistance. It was because I noticed something familiar about that Tacoma Mall terrorist. I can’t remember the date I was talking to the Seattle police but I think it was shortly after I arrived in the gulag at Pioneer Square. I remember standing there in front of the patrol car camera pointed at me as I told the police patrolman that I had suspicions that the vagrants in the area thought I was an informant. I think I wrote some of that in my journal, but that may have been the period when I was avoiding computer access. The part that stands out in my mind is that he immediately dismissed my suspicions and said that he didn’t think anyone thought I was an informant. Then, as usual, they dumped me off at the hospital. I don’t even remember them asking me any substantive questions. That was the time the paramedic told me I had high-blood pressure as I was waiting in the ER while strapped on the gurney.

CHRONOLOGY

October 25, 1945 Taiwan is returned to China.

Upon its defeat in World War II, Japan is forced to cede Taiwan back to China. Japan had governed the island since 1895 as a result of its victory in the Sino-Japanese War.

March 23, 1996 Taiwan holds first direct presidential election.

In a strong vote of confidence for the Nationalist Party, Lee Teng-hui is reelected to the Taiwanese presidency with 54 percent of the vote. He beats a pro-independence candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). China claims the election proves Taiwanese voters reject the idea of separation from the mainland.

Summer 1996

Taiwan Played the U.S. "Like a Fiddle"

by Marc Lanoue

On March 23, 1996, Lee Teng-hui thanked 50,000 cheering supporters for contributing to his landslide victory in Taiwan’s first democratic presidential elections. The 76 percent turnout, along with Lee’s overwhelming triumph, demonstrated the ineffectiveness of Beijing’s attempts to influence election results. Chinese opponents believe Lee’s push for greater international recognition for Taiwan masks a plan to bring about the island’s independence and end the "One China" policy.

On March 9, China’s People’s Liberation Army announced that it would conduct live-fire military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. These exercises were presumably intended to undermine Taiwanese support for Lee. Last year this scheme seemed to have the desired effect. After a series of missile tests and a Chinese broadcast of these tests five days before Taiwan’s parliamentary elections, the New Opposition Party, regarded as the most conciliatory towards China, tripled its number of seats.

The Internment of Japanese Americans as reported by

Seattle Area Weekly Newspapers

A Seattle Ethnic Press Report

by Luke Colasurdo

On December 7, 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, thrusting the United States into both war and a state of hysteria. By the dawn of Monday December 8th, the FBI had arrested hundreds of Japanese immigrants, many of whom would spend the duration of the war in jail. These arrests would foreshadow the plight of Japanese Americans on the West Coast for the next five years.

Almost over night the country had taken on a new sense of patriotism and a belief in contributing to an all out war effort. Along the West Coast, the supposed threat of Japanese dive bombers appearing in the sky at any minute was palpable. Night-time black outs up and down the coast were being enforced by the military. Soon all “enemy aliens,” any Japanese, German, or Italian immigrants, would be locked out of areas that were deemed necessary to defense along the West Coast. The hysteria would finally culminate in President Roosevelt signing executive order 9102, which established the War Relocation Authority on March 18, 1942. This order authorized the military to designate areas along the coast from which all enemy aliens, both immigrants and native born, were to be moved inland to relocation camps.

A day of infamy: World Trade Center collapses in terrorist attack

By David Crary and Jerry Schwartz

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — In the most devastating terrorist onslaught ever waged against the United States, knife-wielding hijackers crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center on Tuesday, toppling its twin 110-story towers. The deadly calamity was witnessed on televisions across the world as another plane slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed outside Pittsburgh.

"Today, our nation saw evil," President Bush said in an address to the nation Tuesday night. He said thousands of lives were "suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror."

Said Adm. Robert J. Natter, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet: "We have been attacked like we haven't since Pearl Harbor."

Establishing the U.S. death toll could take weeks. The four airliners alone had 266 people aboard and there were no known survivors. In addition, a firefighters union official said he feared an estimated 200 firefighters had died in rescue efforts. Dozens of police officers were believed missing.

No one took responsibility for the attacks that rocked the seats of finance and government, but federal authorities identified Osama bin Laden — who has been given asylum by Afghanistan's Taliban rulers — as the prime suspect.

Aided by an intercept of communications between his supporters and harrowing cell phone calls from at least one flight attendant and two passengers aboard the jetliners before they crashed, U.S. officials began assembling a case linking bin Laden to the devastation.

U.S. intelligence intercepted communications between bin Laden supporters discussing the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, according to Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The people aboard planes who managed to make cell phone calls each described similar circumstances: They indicated the hijackers were armed with knives, in some cases stabbing flight attendants. They then took control of the planes.

At the World Trade Center, the dead and the doomed plummeted from the skyscrapers, among them a man and woman holding hands.

"Freedom itself was attacked this morning and I assure you freedom will be defended," said Bush, who was in Florida at the time of the catastrophe. As a security measure, he was shuttled to a Strategic Air Command bunker in Nebraska before leaving for Washington.

"Make no mistake," he said. "The United States will hunt down and pursue those responsible for these cowardly actions."

More than nine hours after the U.S. attacks began, explosions could be heard north of the Afghan capital of Kabul, but American officials said the United States was not responsible. "It isn't us. I don't know who's doing it," Pentagon spokesman Craig Quigley said.

Officials across the world condemned the attacks but in the West Bank city of Nablus, thousands of Palestinians celebrated, chanting "God is Great" and handing out candy.

At the Pentagon, the symbol and command center for the nation's military force, one side of the building collapsed as smoke billowed over the Potomac River. Rep. Ike Skelton, briefed by Pentagon officials, said, "There appear to be about 100 casualties" in the building.

The television images were extraordinary: a plane slamming into the second tower as smoke poured from the first; the buildings tumbling down and vanishing in a gray cloud; bloodied survivors stumbling through the streets of Manhattan, covered with dust and ashes.

The attacks altered the very skyline of Manhattan, destroying two buildings where 50,000 people worked. The first airstrike occurred shortly before 8:45 a.m. EDT. By evening, huge clouds of smoke still billowed from the ruins. A burning, 47-story part of the World Trade Center complex — already evacuated — collapsed in flames just before nightfall.

Emergency Medical Service worker Louis Garcia said initial reports indicated that bodies were buried beneath the two feet of soot on streets around the trade center.

"A lot of the vehicles are running over bodies because they are all over the place," he said.

For the first time, the nation's aviation system was completely shut down as officials considered the frightening flaws that had been exposed in security procedures. Financial markets were closed, too.

Top leaders of Congress were led to an undisclosed location, as were key officials of the Bush administration. Guards armed with automatic weapons patrolled the White House grounds and military aircraft secured the skies above the capital city.

Evacuations were ordered at the tallest skyscrapers in several cities, and high-profile tourist attractions closed — Walt Disney World, Mount Rushmore, Seattle's Space Needle, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

The Federal Reserve, seeking to provide assurances that the nation's banking system would be protected, said it would provide additional money to banks if needed.

In Afghanistan, where bin Laden has been given asylum, the nation's hardline Taliban rulers rejected suggestions he was responsible.

Bin Laden came to prominence fighting alongside the U.S.-backed Afghan mujahedeen — holy warriors — in their war against Soviet troops in the 1980s. But former followers say he turned against the United States during the 1991 Gulf War, seething at the deployment of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War campaign to oust Iraq from Kuwait. He has repeatedly called on Muslims worldwide to join in a jihad, or holy war, against the United States.

Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper, said he received a warning from Islamic fundamentalists close to bin Laden, but had not taken the threat seriously. "They said it would be a huge and unprecedented attack, but they did not specify," Atwan said in a telephone interview in London.

Eight years ago, the World Trade Center was a terrorist target when a truck bomb killed six people and wounded about 1,000 others. Just the death toll on the planes alone surpassed the 168 people killed in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

This is how Tuesday's mayhem unfolded:

At about 8:45 a.m., a hijacked airliner crashed into the north tower of the trade center, the 25-year-old, glass-and-steel complex that was once the world's tallest.

Clyde Ebanks, an insurance company vice president, was at a meeting on the 103rd floor of the south tower when his boss said, "Look at that!" He turned to see a plane slam into the other tower.

"I just heard the building rock," said Peter Dicerbo, a bank employee on the 47th floor. "It knocked me on the floor. It sounded like a big roar, then the building started swaying. That's what really scared me."

The enormity of the disaster was just sinking in when 18 minutes later, the south tower also was hit by a plane.

"All this stuff started falling and all this smoke was coming through. People were screaming, falling, and jumping out of the windows,"

Hey there podcast listeners, it's Ira Glass. Just a little warning that in this podcast there's a word that we beep on the radio for FCC reasons that we are not beeping here in the podcast, and in the other non-radio versions of this episode. OK. I think it's a really nice show. Hope you like it.

Ira Glass

I was talking to some homicide detectives in Chicago. And they told me that, contrary to what you might have heard, most criminals do not actually return to the scene of the crime. Arsonists do. They like to watch the flames. Serial killers sometimes do, but they're crazy. Other kinds of criminals aren't really known for going back to the place where the crimes happened. Like thieves, for example.

'COLUMBIA IS LOST'

Shuttle Burns Up Over Texas, Killing All 7 Crew Members

February 02, 2003|Scott Gold | Times Staff Writer

HOUSTON — The space shuttle Columbia, flying at 18 times the speed of sound, disintegrated in a rumbling roar and incandescent flashes of light Saturday over East Texas, killing all seven of its astronauts and scattering chunks of metal and machinery across two states, only 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

It sounded like "rolling thunder," one witness said. Shock waves rattled homes and barns 39 miles below. Bright objects hurtled off the spacecraft, and the debris plummeted to Earth. Pieces were soaked with toxic fuel. Some were in flames and started several brush fires. Plumes of chalk-white smoke streaked across the blue sky, visible from Texas to Mississippi.

Officials warned people in East Texas and northwestern Louisiana not to touch the toxic debris. No injuries were reported on the ground. There was at least one report of human remains from the shuttle, recovered in Hemphill, Texas, near the Louisiana line. A hospital employee on his way to work told authorities he found body parts near some debris.

Searchers scour 'huge debris field'

TEXAS COUNTIES

February 03, 2003

Searchers seeking debris from the shuttle Columbia continued their task on horseback and in four-wheel drive vehicles Monday as officials worked to identify astronauts' remains at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Astronauts are working with searchers in Texas and Louisiana to assure proper handling of remains, said Bob Cabana, director of flight crew operations at Johnson Space Center.

"We're treating those remains with the ultimate respect and care that they deserve," Cabana said.

The Israel Defense Forces is sending a military Rabbinate representative to Texas to assist in identifying the body parts of the Columbia crew, the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported.

Remains of Columbia astronauts found

Washington, February 2

Human remains believed to be those of the seven astronauts, including India-born Kalpana Chawla, on board the ill-fated American shuttle Columbia have been located in Texas and Louisiana even as investigators struggled to establish the cause of the breakup of the spacecraft minutes before its landing.

“I can confirm human remains from the space shuttle Columbia have been found in the debris” in Hemphill, about 180 miles from Dallas where a lot of twisted metal from Columbia have been found, a spokesman of the local police said, but gave no details.

Two young boys were reported to have found a charred human leg on their farm in Sabine county.

A hospital employee on his way to work reported finding of a what appeared to be charred torso, thigh bone on a rural road.

Body parts believed to be from the astronauts have been recovered near Hemphill in eastern Texas near the state’s border with Louisiana Texas along with a helmet and uniform badges.

The remains have been sent for DNA testing, a BBC report said.

Along with the remains an intact mission patch, with the names of the seven Columbia crew members was also discovered.

The kids in the tenements have no place to play except in streets where traffic is a hazard. Mickey gets the idea of building barricades to give our gang space to play at an intersection, but a beat cop, the nasty "Hard-Boiled" McManus, puts a quick end to that. A sympathetic constable and a detective who has kids of his own give our gang a chance to help law enforcement. The little rascals wear uniforms and keep an eye on things: Joe, for instance, eyes the bananas at Tony's fruit stand. When the now-fired McManus returns and seeks revenge, the junior police force and their adult colleagues are put to the test.

The bicentennial American dollar coin was placed into circulation by the United States Treasury. For the first time, the dollar coin had no silver content; the 1974 coins had 40 percent silver. The dollar still had the image of the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the obverse, with "1776-1976" beneath, but the reverse featured a new image, showing the Liberty Bell and the Moon.

General of the Army (United States)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

General of the Army (GA) is a five-star general officer and is the second highest possible rank in the United States Army. A special rank of General of the Armies, which ranks above General of the Army, does exist

A General of the Army ranks immediately above a general and is equivalent to a fleet admiral

The insignia for General of the Army, as created in 1944, consisted of five stars in a pentagonal pattern, with points touching. The five officers who have held the 1944 version of General of the Army are:

George Marshall December 16, 1944

Douglas MacArthur December 18, 1944

Dwight D. Eisenhower December 20, 1944

Henry H. Arnold December 21, 1944

Omar Bradley September 22, 1950

The timing of the first four appointments was coordinated with the appointments of the U.S. Navy's first three five-star Fleet Admirals (William D. Leahy on December 15, 1944, Ernest J. King on December 17, 1944, and Chester W. Nimitz on December 19, 1944) to establish both a clear order of seniority and a near-equivalence between the services. The final naval appointment of five-star rank, December 11, 1945 to William F. Halsey, Jr..

President Bush will present America's top award for bravery to the family of the sergeant who died defending his soldiers.

By ALEX LEARY

Published February 2, 2005

Since the Civil War, just 3,439 men (and one woman) have received the Medal of Honor. It recognizes only the most extreme examples of bravery - those "above and beyond the call of duty."

That oft-heard phrase has a specific meaning: The medal cannot be given to those who act under orders, no matter how heroic their actions. Indeed, according to Library of Congress defense expert David F. Burrelli, it must be "the type of deed which, if he had not done it, would not subject him to any justified criticism."

Checkers Speech

My Fellow Americans,

I come before you tonight as a candidate for the vice presidency and as a man whose honesty and integrity has been questioned.

Now, the usual political thing to do when charges are made against you is to either ignore them or to deny them without giving details. I believe we have had enough of that in the United States, particularly with the present Administration in Washington, D.C.

To me the office of the Vice Presidency of the United States is a great office, and I feel that the people have got to have confidence in the integrity of the men who run for that office and who might attain them.

I have a theory, too, that the best and only answer to a smear or an honest misunderstanding of the facts is to tell the truth. And that is why I am here tonight. I want to tell you my side of the case.
