The night before the first braves game played in Atlanta, general manager Dick Cecil called Atlanta Journal sportswriter Lee Walburn: “Want to join us for batting practice?”

Walburn raced to the stadium and was at home plate “before the players strapped their jocks on.” And so, with soon-to-be announcer Ernie Johnson pitching, Walburn hit the first ball in Atlanta Stadium, a line drive into left field.

“Of course, the next night Tommie Aaron hit the first home run in the Atlanta stadium, and that’s what history will record,” says Walburn. Tommie and big brother Hank played that April 9, 1965, game in Atlanta—an exhibition outing against the Detroit Tigers—as Milwaukee Braves. Although Atlanta won the franchise in 1964, legal disputes kept the team tied up in Milwaukee into early 1966.

The Atlanta Braves played their first official season opener on April 12, 1966

There was, or still is, that baseball player with the Atlanta Braves named Chipper Jones. For several times, I have thought to myself that he is a half-brother of Kerry Burgess, or now as I write this, the correct description would be that Chipper Jones, the thought has occurred to me several times, is the biological son of Joseph Wayne Burgess, and therefore a foster brother of Kerry Wayne Burgess, and the half-brother of Kevin Burgess, also the biological son of Joseph Wayne Burgess. I thought about writing about this line of thought again now because I just noted that the nickname for Adrian Pasdar's character in the 1986 film "Top Gun" is "Chipper" and I believe the intention there was to create an association due to Adrian Pasdar being Tom Cruise's half-brother and they have the same biological father.

I had this crazy idea that I have been up in the Space Shuttle. It makes sense. There was that time with Tracie at 6 Flags in Atlanta.

There was that brown leather jacket I used to love to wear, they were fashionably called bomber jackets.

I pointed out that the electrical usage meter on that house was made by the company I made a service call to down in Union South Carolina after I drove there from Greenville South Carolina. I clearly remember this aviation incident in 1994. That day 2 July 1994 was only five days after 27 June 1994.

I looked it up a short while ago because I was trying to remember other details about 1994 in my memory. I mentioned that incident in my private journal back in 2006 and I haven't looked up the exact day but I think that was pre-May 2006.

The way I remember it, I was sitting a bar in Charlotte North Carolina that I had started going to just about every evening after work. The bartender was also a fan of Atlanta Braves baseball, as was I. I told him one time he resembled in appearance a guy I went to United States Navy basic training with in 1984 but I don't think he ever actually told me whether he knew that guy and I wondered if they were related.

The way I remember it, I heard that thunderstorm roll through and I thought later, probably talking to other people in that bar, that we probably could have seen that aircraft flying nearby if we had walked to the frontdoor of that bar. That bar was not very far from where I lived at the time at Whitehall Estates in Charlotte North Carolina and that area is close to the airport. Commercial jet airplanes were always screaming over my apartment. I looked on the map to see if I could see the name of that bar in the images but I don't see it although I clearly remember where that bar was located.

FIRST CHAPTER

'Reagan's Path to Victory'

By KIRON K. SKINNER, ANNELISE ANDERSON and MARTIN ANDERSON

Ronald Reagan's rise to national political prominence began on October 27, 1964, when he gave a televised campaign speech on behalf of Senator Barry Goldwater (R-Arizona), the Republican nominee for president. Speculation about Reagan running for president began following what became known as "the speech." During the next decade, Reagan's national political profile grew - and so did speculation about a presidential bid. On November 8, 1966, Reagan defeated Edmund "Pat" Brown, the two-term incumbent, for the governorship of California by a million-vote margin. In 1968, he became a "favorite son" candidate for the Republican nomination for president, briefly challenging Richard Nixon at the convention in Miami Beach, Florida. On November 3, 1970, he was reelected California's governor by defeating Assemblyman Jesse Unruh by a half-million votes. In 1972, he actively campaigned on behalf of President Richard Nixon's reelection effort. When he stepped down as governor of California in January 1975, Reagan was a seasoned political figure who was widely considered to be a future Republican presidential nominee.

It soon became clear from Reagan's actions that he was determined to run for president of the United States. As the popular ex-governor of California, he could have moved on to the private sector, giving speeches, serving on corporate boards, perhaps even making a movie or two - and making lots of money. He didn't. President Gerald Ford offered him the prestigious post of ambassador to Great Britain; he turned it down. He could have gone to Washington and served in President Ford's cabinet as secretary of commerce or transportation. He said no to the president.

Instead Reagan followed a different path - a path that eventually led to victory, to becoming the 40th president of the United States.

Reagan faced a daunting gauntlet as he took his first steps along that path in 1975. The country had just gone through the trials of the Watergate political scandal. In January a bleak national poll was announced to Republican state chairs meeting in Chicago. It showed that "only 18 percent of the American people identified themselves as Republicans." President Nixon was forced to resign on August 9, 1974. Democrats made substantial gains in the November 5, 1974, elections in both houses of Congress and in state legislatures.

On February 6, 1975, Reagan had his 64th birthday, one year short of when many people retire. While he had a growing band of supporters, many thought he was too old and had misgivings about his health and endurance. They doubted he could survive the long run for the presidency, to say nothing of governing for four - and perhaps eight - years.

Many thought he was far too conservative, a Neanderthal throwback, even more so than Barry Goldwater, whom Lyndon Johnson had defeated by a landslide just ten years earlier. He had no major financial support and his full-time staff was only half a dozen or so. Moreover, few politicians were in his corner - only one U.S. senator, Paul Laxalt of Nevada, and a couple of members of Congress.

Finally, and most important, Reagan faced the prospect of running against an incumbent president - a Republican one. It is tough enough to run against an incumbent president of another party, but it is nigh impossible to take out one of your own in a primary fight. In Republican circles, running against a president of your own party was "just not done."

But Reagan ran.

It was not supposed to happen this way. With Richard Nixon's election to a second term in 1972, Reagan's staff expected him to be running, if he chose to do so, for an open seat, not against an incumbent, let alone an incumbent of his own party. The field of candidates for the Republican nomination of 1976, they thought, might include Charles Percy, Republican senator from Illinois; John Connally from Texas, who had been Nixon's secretary of the treasury; and Nelson Rockefeller, who resigned as governor of New York in December 1973 during his fourth term.

But that was before Watergate. When Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 and Gerald Ford became president, he also became the leading contender for the 1976 nomination. Ford was vulnerable, however. He had been selected to replace vice president Spiro T. Agnew when Agnew resigned in 1973 over another scandal. Nixon's first choice as a replacement for Agnew was John Connally, but the Congress objected. Thus, an unelected, second-choice vice president became the incumbent president.

Ford nominated Nelson Rockefeller to take the vacant vice presidency on August 20, 1974. It was a job Reagan probably thought should have gone to him. Reagan had told reporters that the executive experience of governors was often overlooked in selecting national leaders, and also stated that the new vice president should hold views consistent with the mandate of 1972, which he believed reflected the Republican Party's conservative and even libertarian philosophical basis, "a belief in individual freedom and the reduction of government." Rockefeller's reputation as a member of the Eastern liberal establishment and left wing of the Republican party did not fit this description; his selection was viewed as an outrage by many conservatives.

Ford had never taken Reagan seriously, and Reagan had not even been on his final list of five candidates for the vice presidency. Ford eventually asked Rockefeller to withdraw from the ticket for the 1976 election given Rockefeller's unpopularity within the party, but it was November 3, 1975, before Rockefeller made the announcement - well after the July 15, 1975, formation of Citizens for Reagan, which would become Reagan's campaign committee, and barely before the formal announcement of Reagan's candidacy on November 20. Ford's support with the general public had fallen, furthermore, after he pardoned Nixon on September 8, 1974.

In 1974, as Reagan was preparing to leave the governorship, Walter Cronkite, the famous newscaster, offered him the opportunity to do two commentaries a week on the CBS Evening News. Reagan would be balanced by Eric Sevareid, who would also do two commentaries on other nights. Reagan's staff was ecstatic. That would give Reagan roughly 40 percent of the nightly news viewing audience, to say nothing of how much money he might make.

True, Cronkite did offer him a large audience, but it was under Cronkite's control. CBS television could have fired Reagan at will. They could have followed his commentary with a rebuttal or presented him as representing a far-out minority, the "other side." He could only speak twice a week, and he had no control over the news that night which would set the stage for his talk.

Reagan said no to Cronkite's offer. The answer he gave to Mike Deaver, a senior aide, was that "people will tire of me on television - they won't tire of me on the radio."

That may not have been the real reason. Reagan was quietly intent on running for president. He needed a way to speak to the voters - millions of them. As he prepared for the 1980 campaign, he commented on how he had communicated with the public since he left the governorship in this February 5, 1979, letter:

I am trying to avoid declaring until as late as I can in the year for a number of reasons. 1.) I think it is too early and 2.) I lose some valuable forums the day I declare, among them 300 radio stations (5 days a week), 100 newspapers (twice a week), to say nothing of all the speaking engagements. But, I am going to be in this race - don't quote me on that to the press, but you tell anyone who's interested that you are sure I am going to do it.

What Reagan wanted was control of a large megaphone, one with which he could speak daily to potential voters on what he wanted to talk about.

On behalf of radio producer Harry O'Connor, actor Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. asked his old friend Reagan if he would be interested in doing a radio commentary that O'Connor would produce and syndicate nationally. In October 1974, Peter Hannaford, assistant to the governor and director of public affairs, and Michael Deaver, an aide to the governor, presented Reagan with a comprehensive proposal that included O'Connor's offer, a nationally syndicated newspaper program, and speaking engagements around the country. Reagan liked the proposal and agreed to do it under the management of their new firm, Deaver & Hannaford, Inc.

Two strategy documents dated November 4, 1974, provided an outline and guide for Reagan's post-governorship activities, now two months away. "Testing the potential strength of a Presidential bid, without RR [Ronald Reagan] overtly stepping out of the 'mashed potato circuit' role he has described for himself" was discussed in "Ronald Reagan: Building a National Organization." In "Ronald Reagan: A Program for the Future," the upcoming nationally syndicated radio program and newspaper column as well as speaking engagements around the country were described as necessary components for Reagan to "maintain influence in the Republican Party; strengthen and consolidate leadership as the national conservative spokesman; and enhance [his] foreign affairs credibility."

By January 8, 1975, three days after he had turned over the governor's mantle to Democrat Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown, Reagan had crafted his first set of radio commentaries. On that day, shortly before his first newspaper column would be published, he sat down in the recording studio and taped 13 commentaries. The first one for which a handwritten draft has been found was on inflation. Radio stations flocked to his commentary and soon he was broadcasting daily on more than 200 radio stations.

Reagan's broadcasts reached potential voters in virtually every nook and cranny of the United States. Occasionally the program was rejected regardless of its potential to attract advertisers. The KFI (Los Angeles) radio station manager wrote on December 4, 1974, "Thank you for sending the Ronald Reagan audition. We are not interested at this time." And then he added by hand: " - even sponsored!" During his radio broadcasting career from 1975 to 1979, it is estimated that he spoke to between 20 and 30 million Americans a week.

The personal campaign machine that Reagan built and ran from 1975 to 1979 was his pathway to the presidency. His speeches and columns were important and necessary, but his radio commentaries were the driving force. The radio program gave Reagan a national platform that no other politician had at the time.

Advertisers would occasionally withdraw sponsorship of Reagan's radio program because listeners complained about Reagan's views, and a handful of newspaper editors who contended that Reagan appeared too much like a presidential candidate canceled his column. As stipulated by the provision for equal opportunity by the Federal Communications Act, media outlets are to provide equal air time to qualified political candidates. On November 20, 1975, Reagan announced his intention to seek the Republican Party's nomination for the presidency.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Jan 27, 1943:

Reagan serves in film unit

On this day in 1943, future President Ronald Reagan, an Army Air Corps first lieutenant during World War II, is on an active-duty assignment with the Army's First Motion Picture Unit.

Technically, Reagan was a unit public relations officer, however Warner Brothers Studios and the American Army Air Corps had tapped him the previous year to star in a motion picture called Air Force. To allow filming to go forward, Reagan was transferred from his cavalry unit to the Air Corps' motion-picture unit in early January 1943.

Housed in the old Hal Roach studios, the First Motion Picture Unit (FMPU)--its acronym was pronounced fum-poo--produced military training, morale and propaganda films to aid the war effort. FMPU released Frank Capra's Why We Fight series and a documentary of the bomber Memphis Belle, the crew of which completed a standard-setting 35 bombing missions in Europe. The films were screened on domestic training grounds and in troop camps overseas as well as in U.S. movie theaters.

Air Force, which was later renamed Beyond the Line of Duty, conveyed the true story of the heroic feats of aviator Shorty Wheliss and his crew and featured narration by Lt. Ronald Reagan. The documentary, intended to promote investment in war bonds, won an Academy Award in 1943 for best short subject. Reagan went on to narrate or star in three more shorts for FMPU including For God and Country, Cadet Classification, and the The Rear Gunner. Reagan also appeared as Johnny Jones in the 1943 full-length musical film This is the Army.

HISTORY

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Jan 27, 1943:

Americans bomb Germans for first time

On this day, 8th Air Force bombers, dispatched from their bases in England, fly the first American bombing raid against the Germans, targeting the Wilhelmshaven port. Of 64 planes participating in the raid, 53 reached their target and managed to shoot down 22 German planes—and lost only three planes in return.

The 8th Air Force was activated in February 1942 as a heavy bomber force based in England. Its B-17 Flying Fortresses, capable of sustaining heavy damage while continuing to fly, and its B-24 Liberators, long-range bombers, became famous for precision bombing raids, the premier example being the raid on Wilhelmshaven. Commanded at the time by Brig. Gen. Newton Longfellow, the 8th Air Force was amazingly effective and accurate in bombing warehouses and factories in this first air attack against the Axis power.

Analysis -- Timely Crisis In Iraq Helpful To Clinton On Number Of Levels

By Ruth Marcus, Daniel Williams

Seattle Times News Services: Washington Post

WASHINGTON - The immediate goal was to punish Iraq for its alleged plot to kill former president George Bush, but Saturday's missile strike offered a variety of side benefits, both domestic and international, to a Clinton administration in search of a stronger image.

The episode combined a perfect villain (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein), an outrageous crime (a plot to kill a former president), and a high-tech, low-risk solution (pilotless cruise missiles seeking out Iraq's intelligence headquarters). Clinton's aides, while insisting that the response was entirely justified by the assassination attempt, also were quick yesterday to seize on its public relations benefits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Public_Enlightenment_and_Propaganda

Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.

The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.

Role in the Nazi state

When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.

World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.

Organization

The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels

Propaganda

Main article: Nazi propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.

Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."

Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government.

V-2 missile

V-2 missile, German in full Vergeltungswaffen-2 (“Vengeance Weapon 2”), also called V-2 rocket or A-4, German ballistic missile of World War II, the forerunner of modern space rockets and long-range missiles.

Developed in Germany from 1936 through the efforts of scientists led by Wernher von Braun, it was first successfully launched on October 3, 1942, and was fired against Paris on September 6, 1944. Two days later the first of more than 1,100 V-2s was fired against Great Britain (the last on March 27, 1945). Belgium was also heavily bombarded. After the war both the United States and the Soviet Union captured large numbers of V-2s and used them in research that led to the development of their missile and space exploration programs.

For tomorrow it will be 70 years since the first V-2 rocket was launched - the weapon developed by Hitler's scientists which brought terror to British cities during the Second World War.

The rocket - the world's first long-range combat-ballistic missile and the first known human artifact to enter outer space - was demonstrated for the first time on October 3, 1942.

U.S. Bombs Baghdad To Retaliate For Plot To Kill Bush

Times News Services

The United States launched a missile attack against Iraqi intelligence headquarters in Baghdad last night in retaliation for what President Clinton described as a "loathsome and cowardly" attempt to assassinate former President Bush during a visit to Kuwait in April.

Saying a "firm and commensurate response was essential to protect our sovereignty," Clinton condemned Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who he said "ruled by atrocity."

The cruise-missile attack on Iraqi intelligence headquarters lit up the Baghdad night sky, but the city was quiet.

Iraqi U.N. Ambassador Nizar Hamdoun acknowledged the U.S. missiles had struck Iraqi government buildings, but would not say whether the intelligence service was hit. He said some missiles fell in residential neighborhoods.

"There were numerous civilian casualties," Hamdoun said, giving no number. "We're still counting the wounded and dead."

Hamdoun denied Iraq was involved in an assassination attempt.

"The attack was completely unwarranted and unjustified," he said.

In a short televised address to the nation last night, Clinton used blunt language and said the attack was needed to "affirm the expectation of civilized behavior among nations."

The target of the American raid, which was carried out by Tomahawk cruise missiles from a U.S. Navy destroyer and cruiser based in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, was the main headquarters of the Iraqi intelligence service in downtown Baghdad. The missiles struck about 3 p.m. PDT, or early Sunday morning in Iraq.

Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that 23 missiles had been launched and that "all 23 performed as they were supposed to." He said that they had "landed in the target area where they were supposed to be."

In his hastily arranged address, Clinton said: "We should not be surprised by such deeds, coming, as they do, from a regime like Saddam Hussein's, which has ruled by atrocity, slaughtered its own people, invaded two neighbors, attacked others and engaged in chemical and environmental warfare."

U.s. Missiles Hit Baghdad

Clinton: Bush Death Plot Forced Attack

June 27, 1993 By Mitchell Locin, Chicago Tribune. Tribune correspondent Carol Jouzaitis and researcher Eric Jackson contributed to this report.

WASHINGTON — The United States launched 23 cruise missiles into downtown Baghdad early Sunday morning in retaliation for April's failed plot to assassinate former President George Bush, which the U.S. concluded was formulated by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Addressing the nation from the Oval Office after the strike, President Clinton said U.S. investigators found "compelling evidence" of Iraq's complicity.

Ranger recalls 'insane,' deadly Somalia mission

October 27, 2001 Posted: 11:03 PM EDT (0303 GMT)

(CNN) -- Before there was Afghanistan, there was Somalia -- and the U.S. military's first "battle" with forces linked to al Qaeda, the terrorist organization run by Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden.

On October 3, 1993, a mission involving scores of U.S. Special Operations forces went astray when one of their Blackhawk helicopters was shot down over Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Outnumbered 10 to 1, the U.S. forces escaped with 18 killed

Carjacked Kids Can't Be Found

Mother Draws Cops' Attention

Lie Test Inconclusive

October 30, 1994 By Knight-Ridder/Tribune.

UNION, S.C. — Authorities remain frustrated in the search for two children who apparently were abducted by a gunman in a carjacking.

Sheriff Howard Wells said Friday there were no suspects in the Tuesday night disappearance of Michael Smith, 3, and his brother, Alexander, 14 months.

Sightings of possible suspects near Union and in North Carolina produced nothing, and police continued to conduct searches and talk to family members looking for clues, Wells said.

He said nobody, including the parents of the children-David Smith, 24, and Susan Vaughan Smith, 23-had been ruled out as possible suspects.

The Stand - The Complete & Uncut Edition

Chapter 16

A day later, on June 23, a big white Connie was roaring north on US 180, in another part of the country. It was doing somewhere between ninety and one hundred, its Corinthian white paint job glittering in the sun, the chrome winking. The opera windows in the rear also gave back the sun, heliographing it viciously.

The trail that Connie had left behind itself since Poke and Lloyd killed its owner and stole it somewhere just south of Hachita was wandering and pretty much senseless. Up 81 to US 80, the turnpike, until Poke and Lloyd began to feel nervous. They had killed six people in the last six days, including the owner of the Continental, his wife, and his smarmy daughter. But it was not the six murders that made them feel antsy about being on the interstate. It was the dope and the guns. Five grams of hash, a little tin snuffbox filled with God knew how much coke, and sixteen pounds of marijuana. Also two .38s, three .45s, a .357 Mag that Poke called his Pokerizer, six shotguns—two of them sawed-off pumps—and a Schmeisser submachine gun. Murder was a trifle beyond their intellectual reach, but they both understood the trouble they were going to be in if the Arizona State Police picked them up in a stolen car full of blow and shootin irons. On top of everything else, they were interstate fugitives. Had been ever since they crossed the Nevada border.

Interstate fugitives. Lloyd Henreid liked the sound of that. Gangbusters. Take that, you dirty rat. Have a lead sandwich, ya lousy copper.

04.19.95-8:55 a.m.

On NW Fourth Street Tim drove west past the Federal Building and then turned north on a one-way street. On Fifth Street he turned right. At the chain link fence in front of the Firestone he pulled over and lit the five-minute fuse. (and Hankins memo dated 5.10.95)

04.19.95-8:55 a.m.

FBI interviewed three witnesses on 04.20.95 who said Unsub #1 closely resembled a person they observed who was still in front of the 5th Street entrance to the Alfred P. Murrah building. (Criminal complaint filed against Timothy McVeigh on 04.21.95.)

04.19.95-9:00 a.m.

He pulled back into the street and at the light at Harvey and NW 5th Street he lit the primary fuse. When the light turned, he pulled into the parking spot in front of the Murrah Building. Possibly two vehicles passed the Ryder truck as he was parking it. One woman looked at Tim as she was headed down the steps to walk into the Murrah Building. She was a white woman, dirty blonde hair, probably mid thirties. He still had on his hat. (and Hankins memo dated 5.10.95)

He left the vehicle in drive, turned off the ignition switch, set the parking brake, dropped the key behind the seat, opened the door, locked it, got out and shut the door behind him. He walked north across Fifth Street into the parking lot without seeing any cars. He did not see any people in the parking lot. He walked down the alley and crossed Robinson Street. He crossed over to the alley behind the YMCA. He did not see any people. He began to jog. At the T behind the YMCA, he turned north into another alley and began to jog when he crossed NW 6th Street. He was about 20 feet into the alley when the bomb went off.

04.19.95-9:02 a.m.

A bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building exploded.

He was seventeen when he went to the jail for kids, and when he turned eighteen they sent him over to the state prison, and how long was he there? Who knew? Not the Trashcan Man, that was for sure. No one in stir cared that he had burned the Methodist Church down. There were people in stir who had done much worse. Murder. Rape. Breaking open the heads of old lady librarians. Some of the inmates wanted to do something to him, and some of them wanted him to do something to them. He didn’t mind. It happened after the lights were out. One man with a bald head had said he loved him—I love you, Donald —and that was sure better than dodging rocks.

Chapter 16

So they had turned north at Deming, now on 180; had gone through Hurley and Bayard and the slightly larger town of Silver City, where Lloyd had bought a bag of burgers and eight milkshakes (why in the name of Christ had he bought eight of the motherfuckers? they would soon be pissing chocolate), grinning at the waitress in an empty yet hilarious way that made her nervous for hours afterward. I believe that man would just as soon killed me as looked at me, she told her boss that afternoon.

Past Silver City and roaring through Cliff, the road now bending west again, just the direction they didn’t want to go. Through Buckhorn and then they were back in the country God forgot, two-lane blacktop running through sagebrush and sand, buttes and mesas in the background, all that same old same old made you want to just rare back and puke at it.

“We’re gettin low on gas,” Poke said.

“Wouldn’t be if you didn’t drive so fuckin fast,” Lloyd said. He took a sip of his third milkshake, gagged on it, powered down the window, and threw out all the leftover crap, including the three milkshakes neither of them had touched.

“Whoop! Whoop!” Poke cried. He began to goose the gas pedal. The Connie lurched forward, dropped back, lurched forward.

“Ride em cowboy!” Lloyd yelled.

“Whoop! Whoop!”

“You want to smoke?”

“Smoke em if you got em,” Poke said. “Whoop! Whoop!”

There was a large green Hefty bag on the floor between Lloyd’s feet. It held the sixteen pounds of marijuana. He reached in, got a handful, and began to roll a bomber joint.

“Whoop! Whoop!” The Connie cruised back and forth over the white line.

“Cut the shit!” Lloyd shouted. “I’m spillin it everywhere!”

“Plenty more where that came from… whoop!”

“Come on, we gotta deal this stuff, man. We gotta deal this stuff or we’re gonna get caught and wind up in somebody’s trunk.”

“Okay, sport.” Poke began to drive smoothly again, but his expression was sulky. “It was your idea, your fuckin idea.”

“You thought it was a good idea.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t know we’d end up drivin all over fuckin Arizona. How we ever gonna get to New York this way?”

“We’re throwin off pursuit, man,” Lloyd said. In his mind he saw police garage doors opening and thousands of 1940s radio cars issuing forth into the night. Spotlights crawling over brick walls. Come on out, Canarsie, we know you’re in there.

Haley won't grant Oprah interview with Susan Smith

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina's new governor won't grant Oprah Winfrey an interview she has been trying to get for a decade with a South Carolina woman who drowned her two sons in 1994.

On her show Wednesday, one of Winfrey's staffers said she has been trying to arrange an interview between the talk show host and Susan Smith for more than 10 years. Smith is serving a life sentence.

Winfrey suggested on the show that Gov.-elect Nikki Haley could change prison rules prohibiting media interviews.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey said Thursday that Winfrey won't get her wish and Smith got enough attention with her original story saying she was carjacked.

Smith has not been interviewed since she was charged.

Chapter 34

He was standing at the head of the graveled drive now, his shoulders aching from carrying the toolkit and the gas. The sign on the gate read CHEERY PETROLEUM COMPANY, INC. ALL VISITORS MUST CHECK IN AT THE OFFICE! THANKS!

A few cars were parked in the lot, not many. Many were standing on flats. Trashcan Man walked up the drive and slipped through the gate, which was standing ajar. His eyes, blue and strange, were fixed on the spidery stairs that wound around the nearest tank in a spiral, all the way to the top. There was a chain across the bottom of these stairs and another sign swung from the chain. This one said KEEP OFF! PUMPING STATION CLOSED. He stepped over the chain and started up the stairs.

It wasn’t right, his mother marrying that Sheriff Greeley. The year he was in the fourth grade he had started lighting fires in mailboxes, that was the year he burned up old Mrs. Semple’s pension check, and he got caught again. Sally Elbert Greeley went into hysterics the one time her new husband mentioned sending the boy to that place down in Terre Haute (You think he’s crazy! How can a ten-year-old boy be crazy? I think you just want to get rid of him! You got rid of his father and now you want to get rid of him!). The only other thing Greeley could do was to bring the boy up on charges and you can’t send a kid of ten to reform school, not unless you want him to come out with a size eleven asshole, not unless you wanted your new wife to divorce you.

Up the stairs and up the stairs. His feet made little ringing noises on the steel. He had left the voices down below and no one could throw a stone this high; the cars in the parking lot looked like twinkling Corgi toys. There was only the wind’s voice, talking low in his ear and moaning in a vent somewhere; that, and the far-off call of a bird. Trees and open fields spread out all around, all in shades of green only slightly blued by a dreaming morning haze. He was smiling now, happy, as he followed the steel spiral up and up, around and around.

When he got to the tank’s flat, circular cap, it seemed that he must be standing directly under the roof of the world, and if he reached up he could scratch blue chalk from the bottom of the sky with his fingernails. He put the gascan and the toolkit down and just looked. From here you could actually see Gary, because the industrial smokes that usually poured from its factory stacks were absent and the air up that way was as clear as it was down here. Chicago was—a dream wrapped in summer haze, and there was a faint blue glint to the far north that was either Lake Michigan or just wishful thinking. The air had a soft, golden aroma that made him think of a calm breakfast in a well-lighted kitchen. And soon the day would burn.

Leaving the gas where it was, he took the toolkit over to the pumping machinery and began to puzzle it out. He had an intuitive grasp of machinery; he could handle it the way certain idiots savants can multiply and divide seven-digit numbers in their heads. There was nothing thoughtful or cognitive about it; he simply let his eyes wander here and there for a few moments, and then his hands would move with quick, effortless confidence.

Hey, Trashcan, whydja want to burn up a church? Why dintcha burn up the SCHOOL?

When he was in the fifth grade he had started a fire in the living room of a deserted house in the neighboring town of Sedley, and the house burned flat. His stepfather Sheriff Greeley put him in the cooler because a gang of kids had beaten him up and now the grown-ups wanted to start (Why, if it hadn’t rained, we could have lost half the township thanks to that goddam firebug kid!). Greeley told Sally that Donald would have to go down to that place in Terre Haute and have the tests. Sally said she would leave him if he did that to her baby, her only chick and child, but Greeley went ahead and got the judge to sign the order and so the Trashcan Man left Powtanville for a while, for two years, and his mother divorced the sheriff and later that year the voters disowned the sheriff and Greeley ended up going to Gary to work on an auto assembly line. Sally came to see Trash every week and always cried.

Trashcan whispered: “There you are, motherfuck,” and then looked around furtively to see if anyone had heard him say that bad swear. Of course no one had, because he was on top of Cheery Oil’s #1 storage tank, and even if he had been down on the ground, there was no one left. Except for ghosts. Above him, fat white clouds floated by.

A large pipe projected out of the tangle of pumping machinery, its bore better than two feet, its end threaded to take what the oil people called a clutch-hose. It was strictly for outflow or overflow, but the tank was now full of unleaded gasoline and some of it had trickled out, perhaps a pint, cutting shiny tracks through the light fall of dust on the tank. Trashcan stood back, eyes bright, still gripping a large wrench in one hand and a hammer in the other. He dropped them and they clanged.

He wouldn’t need the gasoline he’d brought after all. He picked up the can, yelled “Bombs away!” and dropped it over the side. He watched its tumbling, glinting progress with great interest. A third of the way down it hit the stairs, bounced off, and then fell all the way to the ground, turning over and over, spraying amber gas from the side that had been punched open when it hit the stairs.

He turned back to the outflow pipe. He looked at the shiny puddles of gasoline. He took a package of paper matches from his breast pocket and looked at them, guilty and fascinated and excited. There was an ad on the front that said you could get an education in most anything you wanted at the La Salle Correspondence School in Chicago. I’m standing on a bomb, he thought. He closed his eyes, trembling in fear and ecstasy, the old cold excitement on him, making his toes and fingers feel numb.

Hey, Trash, ya fuckin firebug!

The place in Terre Haute let him go when he was thirteen. They didn’t know if he was cured or not, but they said he was.

McVeigh leaves perplexing message

Bomber defends his `legit tactic'

June 11, 2001 By Alex Rodriguez, Tribune staff reporter. Tribune staff reporter Lisa Anderson in Oklahoma City and Tribune news services contributed to this report.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — As last-minute preparations for his execution proceeded on Sunday, Timothy McVeigh met with his lawyers and left one more bewildering message for the world.

McVeigh spent what was to be his last night in the squat brick building that houses the federal government's death chamber. The execution was scheduled for 7 a.m. Monday.

In letters written before and after his original execution date in May and published Sunday in The Buffalo News, McVeigh offered statements that had the guise of apology but repeated the rationalizations he has clung to since the bombing of Oklahoma City's Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995.

The 33-year-old Persian Gulf war veteran wrote that taking 168 lives, including those of 19 children, was a "legit tactic." He previously has described the bombing as revenge for the 1993 siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.

"I'm sorry these people had to lose their lives," McVeigh wrote to the News, his hometown newspaper. "But that's the nature of the beast. It's understood going in what the human toll will be."

Tom Kight, whose 23-year-old daughter, Frankie Merrell, died in the bombing, viewed McVeigh's words as hollow and inconsequential.

"I don't see it as an apology," Kight said from Oklahoma City. "His act spoke for itself. He knew innocent men, women and children were going to be killed.

"There are a lot of ways of dealing with the government," Kight continued, "but you're never going to change government through terrorism. Whatever his justification might be, 168 people died. Nineteen children died."

At 4:10 a.m. Sunday, McVeigh was moved from the federal prison's special confinement unit into the execution building, where he remained in a 9-foot by 14-foot cinder-block cell with a bunk, television, stainless steel sink and toilet.

"He's been cooperative through the entire process, and things have gone pretty much as planned," said U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokesman Richard Russell.

During McVeigh's transfer to the execution building, the condemned man looked up into the night sky and gazed at the moon, something he had not been able to do in years, said his lawyer, Robert Nigh Jr.

Comfortable with fate

McVeigh not only seemed resigned to his fate, he seemed relatively comfortable with it, his lawyers said. He slept a couple of hours early Sunday morning, and had planned to sleep again Sunday night, said Nigh's co-counsel, Nathan Chambers.

When he spoke with Chambers and Nigh on Sunday, he appeared at ease and talked freely.

"I'd say he is in amazingly good spirits," Chambers said. "He is pleasant to talk to, he continues to be affable. He continues to be rational in his discourse."

Neither Chambers nor Nigh would disclose what McVeigh's last words would be.

Nigh spoke of McVeigh's regrets about the people he killed, but did not offer an apology, saying his client has "struggled with that mightily."

He has "tried to express as best he can that he is sorry for the deaths that occurred," Nigh said. "That is not to say that he doesn't believe that he was right."

McVeigh was allowed visits with his lawyers, a spiritual adviser and family up until two hours before the execution. But McVeigh, an agnostic, did not ask for a member of the clergy, and his family was not expected at the prison.

His final meal was two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

In Washington, the Supreme Court turned down without comment Sunday a request to videotape the execution. Lawyers for a man who could face the same method of execution petitioned to make the tape, saying the footage could be helpful in legal arguments that lethal injection is unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment.

The execution would be the federal government's first in 38 years.

Chosen as the site for federal executions because of its central location in the U.S., Terre Haute may be the site of another federal execution in eight days, when Juan Raul Garza is scheduled to die for his involvement in three drug-related murders.

The city has readied itself for legions of demonstrators and media. Up to 1,400 members of the media from around the world filled the front yards along Route 63 on the eastern edge of the prison.

Protest smaller than expected

The contingent of death penalty opponents was smaller than expected Sunday afternoon.

Rev. Bill Breeden of Spencer, Ind., had planned to take part in a large anti-death penalty march from St. Margaret Mary Church on 7th Street to the penitentiary.

Only a handful of demonstrators had gathered by 3 p.m. when the march was scheduled to start. Two hours later, about 60 demonstrators proceeded down the highway.

McVeigh executed for Oklahoma bombing

By The Associated Press and Dallas Morning News

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Stony-faced to the end, Timothy McVeigh was put to death yesterday without uttering a word. More than 600 miles away, those whose lives were shattered by his bomb watched the execution via a video camera, finding neither the apology they hoped to hear nor the suffering some wanted to see.

McVeigh's eyes rolled back, his lips turned slightly blue and his skin appeared jaundiced as he was pronounced dead at 7:14 a.m. CDT at the U.S. Penitentiary.

In his last moments, his face was as blank as it was that April day six years ago when America first saw him escorted out of an Oklahoma jail.

Instead of speaking, McVeigh released a handwritten copy of the 1875 poem "Invictus," which concludes with the lines: "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."

He was given the Roman Catholic last rites by prison chaplain Frank Roof.

McVeigh, a 33-year-old decorated Gulf War veteran, was the first inmate executed by the U.S. government in 38 years. He was convicted of the April 19, 1995, bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people, 19 of them children, and injured hundreds.

To the nation, it was the worst act of terrorism on U.S. soil.

To McVeigh, planting a 7,000-pound truck bomb at a building filled with innocent people was a "legit tactic" for his one-man war against the government.

In Oklahoma City, 232 survivors and victims' relatives watched the execution on a closed-circuit TV broadcast, sent in a feed encrypted to guard against interception. McVeigh appeared to be looking into a small camera that had been installed overhead in his death chamber.

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, who authorized the closed-circuit broadcast, was in Oklahoma City when McVeigh was put to death. He did not watch the broadcast but wanted to be with the families of the victims, officials said.

The execution attracted worldwide attention - credentials were issued to 1,400 members of the media, 100 more than the number of inmates at the prison.

Hundreds more, from Oklahoma City and New York and California and the college down the road, also came to be on hand. The portable electric sign outside the U.S. penitentiary directed protesters to areas identified simply as "Anti" and "Pro."

The protesters began gathering about 1 a.m., more than six hours before "Inmate McVeigh," as Warden Harley Lappin called him, drew his last breath.

In part because the protest areas could hold thousands, the crowds seemed smaller than expected: maybe 300 death-penalty opponents and a smaller number rooting for McVeigh's execution.

The protesters occupied two cordoned camps, with hundreds of yards between them. Bullhorns were banned.

Just before dawn, about 150 death-penalty opponents sat on the grass in concentric circles to observe 168 minutes of silence for those killed in the bombing.

The vast pastures in front of the 61-year-old penitentiary were transformed into a sprawl of big white tents and rented trailers, satellite trucks and bright orange cordons, crisscrossed by miles of electronic cable.

There were 24 witnesses to the execution in Terre Haute, including two bombing survivors and eight others who lost family members.

McVeigh never wavered in his defiance, insisting in a letter to his hometown newspaper, The Buffalo News, that his deadly act was a "legit tactic" in response to the government's bullying behavior - especially FBI raids at Waco, Texas, and Ruby Ridge, Idaho.

McVeigh's body was taken to a local funeral home, where he was cremated and his ashes given to one of his attorneys, Ashmore said. McVeigh originally was scheduled to die May 16, but the federal government postponed the execution after it was disclosed the FBI withheld nearly 4,500 pages of documents from his defense before his 1997 trial.

Only in recent months did McVeigh publicly admit to the bombing, telling the authors of a book that it was necessary to teach the U.S. government a lesson. "I did it for the larger good," he said.

McVeigh portrayed himself as a soldier and the bombing as one more military mission. He called the 19 children "collateral damage," and said he wanted a body count. He was disappointed, he said, that the building had not been leveled.

But McVeigh's road from patriot to terrorist remains something of a mystery.

He was born in Pendleton, N.Y., near Buffalo. His parents divorced when he was a teen.

He enlisted in the Army at age 20 and became a model soldier, advancing to sergeant and winning medals and commendations for his service in the Gulf War.

But he returned from the service disillusioned with the United States. His anti-government fury only grew, culminating with the day he drove across Oklahoma's flatlands in his rented Ryder truck, packed with 55 gallon drums of ammonium nitrate.

He lit the fuses as he neared the Murrah building, parked the truck and walked away, never looking back.

McVeigh never apologized, though in a recent letter to the Buffalo newspaper he said he was "sorry these people had to lose their lives. But that's the nature of the beast. It's understood going in what the human toll will be."

Early yesterday, as a Justice Department spokesman was describing preparations for McVeigh's execution, a steady rain began to fall.

An hour later, when he was pronounced dead, the sun was burning brightly. By midday, the tent-and-trailer city outside the prison was being dismantled.

AIR FORCE CAPT. SCOTT O'GRADY

Mrs. MURRAY. Mr. President, I want to join the President, my House and Senate colleagues, and the American people in expressing my deep relief at the safe return of Air Force Capt. Scott O'Grady, who was shot down over Bosnia 6 days ago while on a NATO mission.

It is a tribute to Captain O'Grady and the Air Force that trained him that he was able to survive for so long under such difficult circumstances. And certainly we must all loudly applaud the brave marines who put their own lives on the line and rescued him under the most treacherous circumstances, braving both missile and small-arms fire during their 5-hour rescue mission, to pull one of their own to safety.

Captain O'Grady's family has no doubt had a week of anguish and hope, and I celebrate with them this wonderful news and the remarkable strength and courage of Captain O'Grady and the marines who come to his rescue.

Scott O'Grady, who is from Spokane, WA, is an inspiration to citizens across my State and this nation, and I am proud to join the many many voices today that are celebrating his safe return.

U.S. F-16 Pilot, From Spokane, Found In Bosnia Marines Rescue Capt. Scott O’Grady Five Days After His Plane Was Downed

Associated Press

Capt. Scott F. O’Grady, the pilot of the U.S. F-16 downed over Bosnia six days ago, was found in good condition in northwestern Bosnia on today and rescued by U.S. Marines.

O’Grady, of Spokane, was picked up 20 miles southeast of Bihac, said Adm. Leighton Smith, the commander in chief of NATO forces, southern Europe.

U.S. forces were searching for the pilot since his plane was shot down Friday over Serb-controlled territory. The Pentagon says a Serb SA-6 missile slammed into its belly, cutting the plane in half.

On Monday, the Pentagon disclosed that it had picked up intermittent signals that may have been coming from the pilot’s emergency homing beacon.

O’Grady, 29, was rescued about 6 a.m. (9 p.m. Wednesday PDT), Defense Secretary William Perry said in Brussels, Belgium, where he is at a meeting with NATO foreign ministers.

Rescuers had received a single Morse code transmission from him late Tuesday afternoon, Perry’s spokesman, Ken Bacon, said.

After a positive identification, Smith ordered a Marine team and CH-53 and Cobra helicopters into the air from the USS Kearsarge in the Adriatic. They were escorted by F-18s and electronic warfare planes.

As he entered NATO headquarters in Brussels with Perry, Gen. John Shalikashvili, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said of the pilot: “I am told that he is well, that he has a six-day beard and that he has a small burn on the back of his neck as a result of exiting the aircraft.”

Smith said O’Grady might have

ejected from the plane but he could not confirm that. The pilot was picked up by helicopter and was being flown to the USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship with a 600-bed hospital.

Considine said the rescue team did not encounter any opposition.O’Grady is assigned to the 555

Fighter Squadron, Aviano Air Base, Italy. A Serb missile blew apart his fighter jet as he flew a mission in NATO’s operation Deny Flight, which bars flights over Bosnia as part of U.N. sanctions.

“All Americans rejoice with me at the successful rescue of Capt. Scott O’Grady tonight and join his parents in their relief after days of uncertainty and anguish,” President Clinton said early today. “Captain O’Grady’s bravery and skill are an inspiration.”

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: A look back, this day in CNN's history in our "CNN 20" segment.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CARL ROCHELLE, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Captain Scott O'Grady spent more than five days hiding, waiting for rescuers, who finally came and whisked him to safety on board the USS Kearsarge. Since last Friday, through wreckage of O'Grady's F-16 fighter was the only visible evidence of his fate. Officials had intermittently heard a beacon believed to be from his emergency radio. But until they actually heard his voice calling, they were not sure he was still alive.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN MILITARY AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT: When they finally pinpoint where he was, they decided to go ahead and launch a rescue mission using Marines off the USS Kearsarge. Helicopters flew in, in day light, which is not the standard procedure. But it was feared, they didn't want him to have to spend another night on the ground once they located where he was.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEN. TERRY MURRAY, USMC: Captain O'Grady ran out of the woods, helmet on, flight jacket, piston in hand, and he was quite pleased to climb on to 53.

COL. MARTIN BERNDT, COMMANDER, RESCUE OPERATION: It was a tremendous feeling this morning as the sun was rising to land in a landing zone or perhaps was not as safe as we would have liked, but to see him running through the brush.

Arkansas Governor Indicted He Faces Felony Charges In Whitewater Land Case

Los Angeles Times

Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker was indicted on felony charges Wednesday along with two others in a case that grew out of the government’s investigation of the controversial Ozark land deal known as Whitewater.

Tucker, a Democrat, becomes the highest-ranking incumbent government official to be charged in the investigation led by independent counsel Kenneth Starr. Indicted at the same time were John Haley, and William J. Marks Sr., both partners of Tucker in a cable television venture.

Although Tucker served as lieutenant governor when President Clinton was governor of Arkansas, his indictment has little - if any - political fallout for the president because the two men were never close allies.

According to the indictment, Tucker, as a private attorney in the late 1980s, conspired with his associates to obtain a loan of $300,000 backed by the Small Business Administration under false pretenses and to hide millions of dollars in profits from the Internal Revenue Service.

After the Tucker indictment was announced by Starr, the White House issued a statement saying that Clinton still views Tucker as “an outstanding public servant.” At the same time, White House officials were quick to emphasize the case did not involve the president in any way.

Still, the president’s lawyers are sure to view the Tucker indictment as an important development because the governor’s chief accuser, former municipal judge David Hale, also has leveled serious allegations at Clinton.

DoD News Briefing: Admiral William Owens, Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff

Presenters: Admiral William Owens, Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff

June 09, 1995 9:00 AM EDT

Thursday, June 8, 1995 - 9 a.m.

Admiral Owens: Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to give you just a short statement here this morning. I can only echo the comments that have already been made by Secretary Perry and General Shalikashvili, General Joulwan, and Admiral Smith in-theater.

This has been a wonderful bit of news for us here in Washington. We've been working hard on this, in support of the theater commander, over the last few days. Of course, most importantly, this attests to this wonderful young man, Scott O'Grady, who was trained well, learned his lessons, and then executed his lessons when it mattered most. So, we're all just terribly proud of this young man and the way he managed to live for five-and-a-half days, in a very difficult situation, then, eventually, lead to his rescue.

Especially here, I want to point out that this NATO operation -- led by General Joulwan, Admiral Smith, General Mike Ryan and, particularly, General Select Marty Brendt, United States Marine Corps, who is commanding the 24th MEU, in the Adriatic, from the KEARSARGE -- was just a wonderful planned and ready capability that was responsible for the quick response that saved the life of this young pilot. But, it wouldn't have happened, again, without Scott O'Grady and his training, his dedication to doing things exactly right and, then, his ability to come together with the rescue forces at just the right moment.

Over the last five days, as I mentioned briefly, the entire Washington inter-agency community has been involved in trying to support, in any way possible, General Joulwan and his military commanders. There has been a continued effort to try to develop information -- to allow us to verify -- that the pilot was alive, and his location, so that we could implement this rescue operation.

The grand part of that effort, of course, was in-theater, but there has been a significant minute-by-minute effort here in Washington to apply all the resources we had, throughout the inter-agency, to this effort.

This NATO rescue operation was well-planned. The ready forces who came out in a matter of just hours, from the time that we had established contact with Scott on the ground, and then authenticated that it was Scott O'Grady -- just attests to the NATO joint military readiness in theater.

The contingency of a search and rescue operation is something that all of our pilots are well trained for. They are individually trained, the staffs are trained, and we hold many of these kinds of capabilities close because they are directly related to our ability to safely rescue our pilots when downed in the future, so many of the operational details of this are not releasable. But we do release the fact that the training has gone on, that Scott was very well-trained, and the wonderful news for Scott, his parents, and for all of us, including the President who, of course, very shortly after Scott was over the Adriatic on the way out, called Scott's parents to tell them how happy the President was. For all of us, this has been just a very happy night, and we're happy that it's over and that it's over safely.

We have had over 69,000 sorties over Bosnia. We have had two aircraft shot down. Both pilots have been rescued. You'll recall the Harrier, which I believe was in the spring of 1994. This readiness to go and save our people when they are in distress is a hallmark of NATO and United States military commitment to take care of our people when they're in distress.

Just briefly, I'll walk you through the pilot rescue. As you can see, the search and rescue effort took place from the USS KEARSARGE. Again, this was the 24th MEU. It was commanded by Marty Brendt. He was given the tasking and, in a very short period of time, launched the rescue package. I'll show you, in a second, the kinds of aircraft that were involved in this operation.

I'll point out to you that sunrise was at 0506 -- that's local time in the region. There's a six-hour time difference between the region and Washington, so all of these times are minus six hours for Washington. So this was 8:08 p.m., last night, for this first event.

The helicopters went in and made the pickup in this general area. This was an area that was only a few kilometers from the estimated crash site. Of course, the helicopters came back out, returned to KEARSARGE. At 0130, Washington- time -- 0730 local -- Basher-52, Scott O'Grady, was safely back aboard KEARSARGE.

I can run through the individual details of this -- I don't believe I'll do that here this morning. There were over 40 aircraft involved in this, and many people involved at the headquarters in Naples, at the headquarters in Aviano, General Joulwan's headquarters in Germany, and certainly back here in Washington. We were following this, event-by-event, as we went through it, last evening.

Here is a listing of the type of aircraft that were involved in this operation -- rescue forces: the CH-53, the Marines; Cobra helicopter gunships; Harrier aircraft; special forces H-53s; suppression-of-enemy-air-defense [SEAD], combat air patrol, and close air support aircraft, as shown here; and support aircraft tankers and surveillance aircraft. Approximately, 40 aircraft. Again, this was a multinational operation. There was, for example, a NATO-AWACS aloft at this time, and it was a joint NATO multi-service operation.

Again, we are all extremely pleased -- for Scott, for his family, for all of us -- that we have this wonderful young man back. We're very proud of the command in Europe that executed this and very proud of Scott.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Q: Could you clarify for us some of these reports that have been received earlier, that there had been beacon signals. Could you say that that first contact this morning was a voice contact and the first one that was received from the pilot?

O'Grady: Kerry's actions after Vietnam constituted treason

August 13, 2004

St. Paul, Minn. — (AP) Scott O'Grady, the Air Force pilot who captured headlines in 1995 when he survived being shot down over Bosnia, on Friday said Sen. John Kerry committed "treason" during the Vietnam War. O'Grady, in an appearance with other military veterans coordinated by President Bush's re-election campaign, said Kerry helped push North Vietnam's proposals for the United States to withdraw at a time when the two countries were still officially at war.

"I see that as treason," said O'Grady, who lives in Texas and has been speaking at veterans events for Bush around the country. He's now retired from the military.

Karyn Kupcinet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karyn Kupcinet (March 6, 1941 – November 28, 1963) was an American stage, film and television actress. She was the only daughter of Chicago columnist and television personality Irv Kupcinet.

Kupcinet had a brief acting career during the early 1960s. Six days after the JFK assassination, her body was found at her West Hollywood, California home. It has been theorized that Kupcinet's death, officially ruled a homicide, was connected to the assassination

Death

On the last day of her life, Kupcinet had dinner with future Lost in Space cast member Mark Goddard and his wife, Marcia Rogers Goddard, at their house on Coldwater Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills (near Mulholland Drive). She was due there at 6:30 pm, but arrived an hour late by taxicab. The couple said Kupcinet only toyed with her food during the meal. Marcia Goddard told two officers from the L.A. County Sheriff's Office that during dinner with Kupcinet "... her lips seemed numb. Her voice was funny. She moved her head at odd angles." The Goddards also noticed that her pupils were constricted. Mark Goddard told authorities that he confronted Kupcinet about her altered state during the meal, and she began to cry, putting her arm around him. At one point during the meal, Kupcinet told her friends an unsubstantiated story about a baby that had been abandoned on her doorstep earlier that day. At 8:30 pm, a taxicab arrived to take her home, and she promised to telephone the Goddards soon.

Kupcinet apparently went straight home after dining with her friends. She was visited by freelance writer Edward Stephen Rubin shortly afterward. The two were then joined by actor Robert Hathaway around 9:30 pm. They told detectives they watched TV, including The Danny Kaye Show, with Kupcinet. They all drank coffee until she fell asleep, sitting next to them on the couch. She awoke and went to her room. The men either turned the TV set off or simply lowered the volume (three days later it was still playing with a low volume), and made sure the door was locked behind them before departing at about 11:15 pm. Hathaway said he and Rubin returned to his place and were later joined by Kupcinet's boyfriend, Andrew Prine, who was also Hathaway's neighbor. The three young men watched television and talked until approximately 3:00 am.

The Goddards went to Kupcinet's apartment on November 30, after she failed to telephone the couple as promised. Mark Goddard stated that he had a "funny feeling" that something was wrong. Upon arriving at Kupcinet's apartment, the couple found her nude body lying on the couch. Mark Goddard initially assumed that she had died from a drug overdose.

Upon searching Kupcinet's apartment, police found prescriptions for Desoxyn, Miltown, Amvicel, and other medications. Authorities also found a note written by Kupcinet that reflected in some detail her emotions regarding issues in her life (i.e., parents, self-image, problems with boyfriend) and people she admired.

Coroner Harold Kade concluded that due to a broken hyoid bone in her throat, Kupcinet had been strangled. Her death was officially ruled a homicide.

Theories

Alleged connection to JFK

Kupcinet's death was first mentioned in connection with the assassination of JFK in 1967 by researcher Penn Jones, Jr. in the self-published book Forgive My Grief II. Jones claimed that an AP wire service story about an unidentified woman who placed a phone call on November 22, 1963 from Oxnard, California, approximately 50 miles north of Los Angeles, was Kupcinet. The woman, who dialed her local operator approximately 20 minutes before the shooting in Dallas, stated that he was going to be shot. Jones alleged that the caller was Kupcinet, attempting to warn someone of the impending assassination. Jones claimed that Kupcinet was told of the assassination by her father (who was allegedly told by Jack Ruby, whom he met in Chicago in the 1940s). Jones speculated that her death was a result of a mob hit to silence her and to send a message to Irv Kupcinet to remain silent about his knowledge.

Irv Kupcinet denied that he or his daughter had prior knowledge of the assassination. This was supported by Karyn Kupcinet's friends, actor Earl Holliman, Holliman's then-girlfriend, and Karyn's boyfriend Andrew Prine, who traveled to Palm Springs with Kupcinet on November 22. Kupcinet reportedly seemed upset and shocked about the assassination and did not reveal any foreknowledge of the event.

Media attention

During the production and subsequent release of Oliver Stone's film JFK, Irv Kupcinet attacked the movie and the conspiracy theories surrounding it. When the film's box office success led to a wave of media attention about the JFK conspiracy, NBC's Today Show broadcast a list of mysterious deaths, including that of Karyn Kupcinet. Irv Kupcinet responded to the Today broadcast in his column in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 9, 1992:

The NBC Today Show on Friday [February 7] carried a list of people who died violently in 1963 shortly after the death of President John F. Kennedy and may have had some link to the assassination. The first name on the list was Karyn Kupcinet, my daughter. That is an atrocious outrage. She did die violently in a Hollywood murder case still unsolved. That same list was published in a book years ago with no justification or verification. The book left the impression that some on the list may have been killed to silence them because of knowledge of the assassination. Nothing could be further from the truth in my daughter's case. The list apparently has developed a life of its own and for Today to repeat the calumny is reprehensible. Karyn no longer can suffer pain by such an inexcusable mention, but her parents and her brother Jerry can.

On September 30, 1999, an episode of E! True Hollywood Story, entitled "Death of a Dream: Karyn Kupcinet", detailed Kupcinet's life and theories regarding her death.

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Former U.S. Air Force Capt. Scott O’Grady will be the keynote speaker at the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce’s 66th annual banquet on Feb. 28.

O’Grady became a national hero in 1995 when the fighter pilot ejected over Bosnia after his F-16 was shot down by Bosnian Serbs and survived more than five days in the wilderness before being rescued by U.S. Marines.

Buzz Timmons, vice president of the chamber’s board, praised O’Grady as an inspiring public speaker who he expects will bring a sense of pride to motivate an audience of up to 300 at the event.

“We’re hoping to bring attention to the fact that patriotism and honor in America are still alive and well,” Timmons said.

Timmons said O’Grady committed to participate in the event due in part to his friendship with Timmons’ son.

Lorena Valencia, the chamber’s executive director, said her organization in past years was pleased to host local celebrities and area leaders to speak at the event, but said she was excited at the chance to bring in a high-profile name for the banquet.

“I think for Brownfield or anywhere, just being able to share a story of someone with such a willingness to fight for your life, to survive and support your country, is important for everyone,” she said.

In 2011, O’Grady announced his candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination for the Texas State Senate District 8 seat in Collin and Dallas counties, according to The Associated Press. He withdrew from the race in 2012 citing, in part, concerns about redistricting and an uncertain primary date.

O’Grady co-authored the book “Basher Five-Two: The True Story of F-16 Fighter Pilot Captain Scott O’Grady,” recounting his survival and rescue after being shot down June 2, 1995, while enforcing a NATO no-fly zone over war-torn Bosnia.

His story inspired the 2001 movie “Behind Enemy Lines.”

Historical Documents from the Bureau's Founding

Stanley W. Finch, First Chief of the Bureau of Investigation

Stanley W. Finch was the Chief Examiner in the Department of Justice, 1909, 1910, 1911, and up to April 30, 1912, and as such was designated by the Attorney General to be the Chief of the Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice. A. Bruce Bielaski, an examiner in the Department, was his assistant.

On April 30, 1912, Mr. Finch was made the Special Commissioner for the suppression of white slave traffic, which office he held until January 1, 1914. He established his office at Baltimore, Maryland, and Alpert H. Pike was his assistant.

The White Slave Traffic Act was passed on June 25, 1910, and the office of Special Commission for the suppression of white slave traffic was created because of the importance that was being placed on that subject matter. The international traffic in alien women for immoral purpose had reached such proportions that a great clamor had gone up for its suppression. The only reason known to Agent for establishing a separate office and title for the white slave traffic assignment was that the woman suffrage movement and other women's organizations had made a great drive to have this law passed, and it had remained rather dormant for about two years and the women's organizations had made demands for its enforcement. It can probably be truthfully stated that this drive really put the white slave law into the mind of nearly everyone, and the results were that hundreds of convictions were had and the house of commercial prostitution no longer flourished as a recognized business.

August 4, 1987 - FCC Rescinds Fairness Doctrine

On this day in 1987, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to rescind the Fairness Doctrine, which required radio and television stations to present balanced coverage of controversial issues. In the 1987 case Meredith Corp. v. FCC, a federal appeals court in Washington D.C. declared that Congress did not mandate the doctrine, and that the FCC did not have to continue to enforce it. The FCC abolished the doctrine by a 4-0 vote.

FCC Repeals Fairness Rule for Broadcasters

August 05, 1987 PAUL HOUSTON Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to repeal the fairness doctrine, prompting key proponents in Congress to renew vows to place into law the 38-year-old policy requiring broadcasters to air all sides of important public issues.

The commission called the doctrine unconstitutional, saying that it inhibits free speech by discouraging broadcasters from making certain documentaries or taking controversial editorial stands.

'Blandness, Nothingness'

"Although its goal was to achieve fairness, it has in fact resulted in blandness and nothingness, chilling the very speech it was designed to foster," FCC general counsel Diane S. Killory declared shortly before the 4-0 vote to end enforcement of the doctrine.

FCC Chairman Dennis R. Patrick said that "we seek to extend to the electronic press the same First Amendment guarantees that the print media have enjoyed since our country's inception."

However, proponents of the fairness doctrine, arguing that listeners and viewers needed First Amendment protection as much as broadcasters, assailed the FCC move as limiting citizen exposure to conflicting views.

Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-S.C.), whose bill to make the doctrine law was vetoed by President Reagan in June after being passed by the Senate, 59 to 31, and the House, 302 to 102, called the FCC decision "wrongheaded, misguided and illogical."

"The American people, not the broadcasters, own the airwaves," he said. "The threat today is that private interests, more motivated by profit than public interest, may limit public discourse."

Similarly, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on telecommunications, termed the FCC action "unconscionable."

Both Hollings and Markey said that they would move as soon as possible to turn the doctrine into law. Congress apparently lacks the votes to override Reagan's veto of the Hollings bill, sources said, but efforts will be made to attach it to legislation that would be difficult to veto.

Compensatory Air Time

The fairness doctrine, adopted in 1949, when there were fewer broadcast outlets, requires that all radio and television stations air contrasting views on controversial issues they address in broadcasts. If a station fails to present all sides of an issue in its initial program, it is required to offer compensatory time later to views that were not included.

In 1969, the Supreme Court ruled that the fairness doctrine was constitutional, but the court suggested in a 1984 case that it might review the issue if presented with new information. Meanwhile, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ordered the FCC last January to respond to a complaint by a Syracuse, N.Y., broadcaster that the doctrine violated its First Amendment rights.

In its action Tuesday, the FCC determined that "the enforcement of the doctrine has actually had the net effect of reducing, rather than enhancing, the discussion of controversial issues of public importance and, therefore, violated the constitutional principles announced by the Supreme Court" in the 1969 case.

Moreover, the FCC said, the doctrine "resulted in excessive and unnecessary government intervention into the editorial processes of broadcast journalists, thereby violating the constitutional standard announced" in the court's 1984 ruling.

After citing the dramatic growth in the number and types of information outlets since the court's 1969 decision, the commission urged the court to reconsider the First Amendment standards that it applied to the broadcast media in that case. Specifically, the FCC argued that "there is no longer scarcity in the number of broadcast media outlets available to the public that could justify a difference in treatment between the printed and electronic press."

Although some contend that the fairness doctrine is "needed to prevent broadcasters from abusing their freedom and slanting their coverage," Patrick said, "the First Amendment does not guarantee a fair press, only a free press." He said that he expected broadcasters to "preclude the abuse of freedom in the vast majority of cases."

U.S. Sending Additional Forces to Gulf

August 05, 1987 ROBERT C. TOTH Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — In response to stepped-up tensions in the Persian Gulf, the Defense Department is dispatching additional surveillance equipment and special forces teams to the region, an Administration source said Tuesday.

The equipment and personnel, aimed at combatting terrorists as well as military forces, are in addition to the eight minesweeping helicopters, small mine countermeasure craft and the Missouri battleship group that have recently been dispatched to the gulf to help escort reflagged Kuwaiti supertankers now carrying U.S. registration.

The equipment, which reportedly includes helicopters, is understood to be aimed at neutralizing Iran's fiberglass speedboats, capable of traveling at 50 knots.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards are believed to have used the speedboats to mine the approaches to the Kuwaiti harbor as well as the area in which the Bridgeton, one of the reflagged tankers, struck a mine July 24 while under escort by U.S. warships.

Along with the personnel, reportedly including more Navy Seal special forces teams, the equipment should also help counter attempts by the Revolutionary Guards to use rocket-propelled grenades fired from speedy rubber dinghies to attack U.S. warships or ships they are convoying.

The guards have made more than a half-dozen such raids in past months, although they went largely unreported in the United States because they were not aimed at American shipping. Pentagon officials want to preclude any further such raids that, like the Bridgeton incident, would embarrass Washington.

Intelligence sources said last week that a flurry of activity by small boats had been detected in the region where the Bridgeton struck the mine on the night before the incident. It was deemed insufficient evidence at the time to turn back the convoy, but subsequent analyses have led to the conclusion that the small boats were in fact sowing mines.

That activity was presumably detected by U.S. surveillance equipment already on the scene. The new equipment and manpower will add to that capability.

Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger told a breakfast meeting with reporters that he could not say when the U.S. buildup in the gulf will end.

"As soon as you (stop), some other anticipated risk may happen and everyone will say, 'But you didn't have enough resources,' " Weinberger said.

Earlier this week, Defense Department officials disclosed that several minesweeping boats and small attack boats would be sent to the gulf aboard the amphibious transport ship Raleigh. They said the ship would arrive in the region in about a month.

The minesweepers will complement eight Navy helicopters that were dispatched late last month to help clear the sea lanes of mines presumably placed by Iran.

Iran Warns Its Forces Are Training for Suicide Attacks on U.S. Warships

August 05, 1987 CHARLES P. WALLACE Times Staff Writer

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran said Tuesday that in its three days of military maneuvers around the Persian Gulf, some units are training to make suicide attacks on U.S. warships with explosive-laden speedboats.

Shipping sources said there has been no appreciable decline in the number of merchant ships using the narrow Strait of Hormuz into the gulf after the start of the maneuvers. But one source said the key test could come after nightfall or early today, since most civilian ships travel through the strait in darkness to avoid confrontation with Iranian vessels.

Warships Warned

On Monday, Iran warned foreign ships to stay out of its territorial waters, normally 12 miles off the coast, for the duration of the maneuvers. A commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, quoted by the official Islamic Republic News Agency, warned warships to remain away during the exercises "or else we will confront them."

France, which dispatched a naval task force to the gulf region last week, warned Iran on Tuesday not to interfere with shipping in international sea lanes.

Although the strait is just 24 miles wide at points, there is an international channel three miles wide in the center. Other ships travel in shallower Omani territorial waters on the southern side of the strait.

Mock Combat

IRNA said the exercises--the first by the Revolutionary Guards--began late Monday when several thousand volunteers, known as Basiji, set up bunkers and other defenses along the coast of the gulf, the strait and the Gulf of Oman.

The agency said that the Revolutionary Guards and volunteer units "ambushed enemy embankments" during the mock combat operations.

A commentary on Tehran radio said "martyrdom-seeking" volunteers "have become quite capable of approaching U.S. warships in their fast boats and dealing deadly blows." Among Iran's weapons are "speedboats loaded with explosives" that would ram their targets in suicide attacks, the radio said. It said the volunteers are practicing on dummy "enemy ships."

Iranian television showed dozens of speedboats docked at a port and others cruising in the gulf, with crews manning heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

More Reflaggings

The Iranians have been threatening to attack American naval units, which have been escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers through the gulf. An American convoy, including the reflagged Kuwaiti tanker Gas Prince, cleared the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, several hours before the Iranian maneuvers began.

On Monday, Rear Adm. Harold Bernsen, the commander of the U.S. Navy's nine-ship Mideast task force, said that three more Kuwaiti tankers will be re-registered and ready to make the trip up the gulf under escort next week.

They are the Gas King, sister ship of the Gas Prince, and two refined-products carriers, the 79,999-ton Ocean City and the 81,283-ton Sea Isle City. Kuwait has substantial sales of refined products in Western Europe under its own brand-name, Q-8.

Victims Being Returned

In other developments, Iran airlifted home the bodies of some of the Iranians killed in riots in Mecca last week. The Iranian news agency said 58 dead and 41 wounded were flown out of Saudi Arabia late Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia said that 402 people, including 275 Iranian pilgrims, were killed during rioting touched off by Iranian demonstrators during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, site of Islam's holiest shrines.

The Iranians accused the Saudis of carrying out "a massacre" by firing at the Iranian pilgrims, who they said were innocently demonstrating against the United States, Israel and the Soviet Union. The Iranian government has called for the overthrow of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd in retaliation.

Earlier, Iranian Prime Minister Hussein Moussavi accused Saudi authorities of delaying the evacuation, saying the plane was surrounded by armed Saudi police and the crew was refused permission to leave the plane, "contrary to all international norms."

The Iranians also have blamed the United States for the Mecca riots. For three days, Iranian officials have maintained a barrage of threats to seek revenge. IRNA quoted Revolutionary Guard Commander Mohammed Malekzadegan as saying: "Iran's naval forces are fully prepared to take revenge on the United States and its criminal accomplices for shedding the blood of innocent pilgrims."

Meanwhile, the first of seven Iranian delegations being sent to Islamic countries to explain the country's position on the Mecca riots--in the wake of anti-Iranian feeling--arrived Tuesday in Pakistan. IRNA said an adviser to Iranian President Ali Khamenei met with President Zia ul-Haq. IRNA quoted Zia as expressing his sorrow at the "saddening bloodshed of Muslims in Mecca on Friday."

Also on Tuesday, Iraq--Iran's opponent in a bloody, almost seven-year-long war--announced that it has developed a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 400 miles, making it capable of hitting Tehran. The official Iraqi press agency said the missile was successfully tested Monday.

The Iranians have been hitting Iraq's capital of Baghdad with Soviet-made missiles for several years, but Iraq has not had the capability of striking the Iranian capital.

At the United Nations in New York, Iran circulated a letter accusing U.S. warplanes patrolling the gulf of violating Iranian airspace on July 11. On that day, it said, three American F-14s entered Iranian airspace at 25,000 feet and were followed by two others at 20,000 feet.

A U.N. spokesman said that Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar has reminded Iran that he is still awaiting its formal response to a two-week-old Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in the gulf war.

Various Iranian officials made negative comments about the resolution when it was passed, but there has been no formal rejection.

Operation Praying Mantis: The Surface View

By Captain J.B. Perkins III, U.S. Navy

For the escorts of Battle Group Foxtrot, preparations for the 18 April 1988 Operation Praying Mantis began in the southern California operating area ten months earlier. From this first underway period as a unit, the Battle Group Commander, Rear Admiral Guy Zeller (Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Three), had insisted on a rigorous set of exercises to prepare for the upcoming tour on station in the North Arabian Sea (NAS). Initially, the ships drilled hard at interpreting rules of engagement (ROE) and at devising means to counter small high-speed surface craft (e.g., Boghammers) and low, slow-flying aircraft—both of which abound in and around the Persian Gulf. We later added exercises stressing anti-Silkworm (an Iranian surface-to-surface missile) tactics, boarding and search, Sledgehammer (a procedure to vector attack aircraft to a surface threat), convoy escort procedures, naval gunfire support (NGFS), and mine detection and destruction exercises.

We practiced in every environment-in the Bering Sea during November, throughout our transit to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, and on station in the NAS. During the battle group evolution off Hawaii in January, we executed a 96-hour Persian Gulf scenario, with a three submarine threat overlaid. We conducted live, coordinated Harpoon missile firings in southern California and off Hawaii, dropped Rockeye, Skipper, and laser-guided bombs (LGBs) on high-speed targets off Point Mugu and Hawaii and drilled, drilled, drilled. By late March, each ship had completed dozens of these exercises, and we were considering easing the pace and working on ways to make the exercises more interesting, as the day approached when the Forrestal (CV-59) battle group would relieve us. Such philosophic discussions ended abruptly when the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) hit a mine on 14 April.

Four battle group ships en route to a port call in Mombasa were turned around, and the USS Joseph Strauss (DDG-16) and USS Bagley (FF-I069) raced north, refueled from the USS Wabash (AOR-5) and steamed through the Straight of Hormuz at more than 25 knots to join teammates, the USS Merrill (DD-976) and USS Lynde McCormick (DDG-8). They, and their Middle East Force (MEF) counterparts, the USS Simpson (FFG-56), USS O'Brien (DD-975), USS Jack Williams (FFG-24), USS Wainwright (CG-28), USS Gary (FFG-5 I), and USS Trelllon (LPO-14) repositioned at high speed as the plan was developed. In the NAS, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) closed to within 120 nautical miles of the Strait of Hormuz. Her escorts, the USS Reasoner (FF-1063) and Truxtun (CGN-35), were stationed to counter the potential small combatant threat in the Strait, and the air threat from Chah Bahar.

On 16 April, I flew with Lieutenant Commander Mark "Micro" Kosnik—my one-officer "battle micro staff"—from the Enterprise to Bahrain at the direction of Commander, Joint Task Force Middle East (CJTFME), Rear Admiral Anthony Less, to assist in planning and executing the response. We were joined on the flagship, the USS Coronado (AGF-11), by the MEF Destroyer Squadron Commander and began working on the plan with the CJTFME staff and other players. The objectives were clear:

Sink the Iranian Saam-class frigate Sabalan or a suitable substitute.
Neutralize the surveillance posts on the Sassan and Sirri gas/oil separation platforms (GOSPs) and the Rahkish GOSP, if sinking a ship was not practicable.
There were also a number of caveats (avoid civilian casualties and collateral damage, limit adverse environmental effects) to ensure that this was in fact a "proportional response."

It was a long night, but by 0330 on 17 April we had developed a plan. We formed three surface action groups, each containing both battle group and MEF ships, that were to operate independently but still be mutually supportive. Surface Action Group (SAG) Bravo was assigned Sassan (and Rahkish), SAG Charlie, Sirri, and SAG Delta, the Sabalan. The Gary was our free safety, a lone sentinel on the northern flank protecting the barges. Each SAG commander had an objective and a simple communications plan to direct our forces, to coordinate if required, and to report to CJFTME.

Both GOSPs were to be attacked in the same fashion: we would warn the occupants and give them five minutes to leave the platform, take out any remaining Iranians with naval gunfire, insert a raid force (Marine reconnaissance unit at Sassan/SEALs at Sirri) on the platform, plant demolition charges, and destroy the surveillance post. Colonel Bill Rakow, Commander of Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) 2-88, and I developed a plan to coordinate NGFS and Cobra landing zone preparatory fire and discussed criteria for committing the raid force, which included the possibilities of die-hard defenders, secondary explosions, and booby traps.

At first light, as SAG Bravo approached the Sassan GOSP, the Trenton began launching helos, including the LAMPS-III from the Samuel B. Roberts, which we used for surface surveillance. The GOSP appeared unalerted as we came into view from the southwest and turned to a northerly firing course- our gun target line was limited by a United Arab Emirates oil field three nautical miles south of Sassan and a large hydrogen sulfide tank on the northern end of the GOSP. H-Hour was set at 0800; at 0755, we warned the Sassan GOSP inhabitants in Farsi and English.

"You have five minutes to abandon the platform; I intend to destroy it at 0800."

This transmission stimulated a good deal of interest and activity among a growing group of Iranians, milling about on the roof of the living quarters. Several men manned their 23-mm. gun and trained it on the Merrill about 5,000 yards away, but many more headed for the two tugs tied up alongside the platform. One tug left almost immediately, and the other departed with about 30 men on board soon afterward. The VHF radio blared a cacophony of English and Farsi as the GOSP occupants simultaneously reported to (screamed at) naval headquarters and pleaded with us for more time. At 0804, we told the inhabitants that their time was up and commenced firing at the gun emplacement. This was not a classic NGFS mission; I had decided on airbursts over the GOSP to pin down personnel and destroy command-and-control antennae, but to avoid holing potential helo landing surfaces.

At the first muzzle flash from the Merrill's 5-inch mount 51, the Iranian 23-mm. gun mount opened up, getting the attention of the ship's bridge and topside watchstanders. The Merrill immediately silenced the Iranian gun with a direct hit, and encountered no further opposition. After about 50 rounds had exploded over the southern half of the GOSP, a large crowd of converted martyrs gathered at the northern end.

The Confession

Sheriff Wells confronted Susan about her story of the carjacking. Wells told Susan that he knew that Susans story of the black carjacker was a lie. He told her that she could not stop at the red light at the Monarch intersection if there were no other cars on the road. Wells told Susan that she had revised her statement because of this inconsistency and that even her back up story was a lie. Wells told Susan that he had undercover officers at the Carlisle intersection working on a drug investigation and that they did not see the alleged carjacker. Wells told Susan that he would have to tell the news media that her story about the alleged black carjacker was not true because Susans accusation had caused tension in Unions black community. After Wells told Susan this, she asked him to pray with her. At the close of the prayers Wells said, "Lord, we know that all things will be revealed to us in time." Wells then looked at Susan and said, "Susan, it is time."

Susan dropped her head and wailed, "I am so ashamed, I am so ashamed." She asked Sheriff Wells for his gun so that she could kill herself. Sheriff Wells asked Susan why she wanted to do that and Susan replied, "You dont understand, my children are not all right."

Susan told Wells about the crushing isolation she had felt while driving her Mazda along Highway 49 on the night of October 25th and the consuming desire she had to commit suicide. Susan had planned to drive her sons to her mothers house, but emotionally she felt so bad that she felt even her mother could not help her. Susan told Wells that her whole life had felt wrong and that she felt she could not escape the loneliness, isolation and failure that had ensnared her. Susan told Wells about her abortion, her troubled marriage to David and her affair with Tom Findlay.

Susan collapsed and began to sob; other investigators entered the room to obtain her written confession. In her confession, Susan filled two pages with carefully written script, rounding off her letters and drawing little hearts whenever she wanted to use the word heart. Susan wrote that she had driven off Highway 49 and onto the road leading to John D. Long Lake because she wanted to commit suicide. She believed that her children would be better off with her and with God than if they were left without a mother and alone. Her plan was that the three of them: Susan, Michael and Alex would die together.

Susan told the investigators that she had tried to end all of their lives by putting the car in neutral and letting it roll down the boat ramp, but she pulled on the parking brake and stopped the car. She did this three times before she stood outside the car and overcome with grief, loneliness and pain reached into the car and released the parking brake sending the car into John D. Long Lake.

Chapter 39

“Now you aren’t very bright,” Flagg said, “but you are the first. And I have the feeling you might be very loyal. You and I, Lloyd, we’re going to go far. It’s a good time for people like us. Everything is starting up for us. All I need is your word.”

“W-word?”

“That we’re going to stick together, you and me. No denials. No falling asleep on guard duty. There will be others very soon—they’re on their way west already—but for now, there’s just us. I’ll give you the key if you give me your promise.”

“I… promise,” Lloyd said, and the words seemed to hang in the air, vibrating strangely. He listened to that vibration, his head cocked to one side, and he could almost see those two words, glowing as darkly as the aurora borealis reflected in a dead man’s eye.

Then he forgot about them as the tumblers made their half-turns inside the lockbox. The next moment the lockbox fell at Flagg’s feet, tendrils of smoke seeping from it.

“You’re free, Lloyd. Come on out.”

Unbelieving, Lloyd touched the bars hesitantly, as if they might burn him; and indeed, they did seem warm. But when he pushed, the door slid back easily and soundlessly. He stared at his savior, those burning eyes.

Something was placed in his hand. The key.

“It’s yours now, Lloyd.”

“Mine?”

Flagg grabbed Lloyd’s fingers and closed them around it… and Lloyd felt it move in his hand, felt it change. He uttered a hoarse cry and his fingers sprang open. The key was gone and in its place was the black stone with the red flaw. He held it up, wondering, and turned it this way and that. Now the red flaw looked like a key, now like a skull, now like a bloody, half-closed eye again.

“Mine,” Lloyd answered himself. This time he closed his hand with no help, holding the stone savagely tight.

“Shall we get some dinner?” Flagg asked. “We’ve got a lot of driving to do tonight.”

Chapter 47

“He’s doing what?”

“That’s what I dreamed. Lines of crosses along Highway 15 made out of barn-beams and telephone poles. People hanging off them.”

“Just a dream,” she said uneasily.

“Maybe.” He smoked and looked west at the red-tinged clouds. “But the other two nights, just before we run on those maniacs holding the women, I dreamed about her—the woman who calls herself Mother Abigail. She was sitting in the cab of an old pickup truck parked on the shoulder of Highway 76. I was standing on the ground with one arm leaning on the window, talking to her just as natural as I’m talking to you. And she says, ‘You got to move em along faster still, Stuart; if an old lady like me can do it, a big tough fella from Texas like you should be able to.’” Stu laughed, threw down his cigar, and crushed it under his heel. In kind of an absent way, as if not knowing what he was doing, he put an arm around Frannie’s shoulders.

“They’re going to Colorado,” she said.

“Why, yes, I think they are.”

Trial Transcripts in the case

United States v. Price, et al.

(also known as the

"Mississippi Burning" incident) 1967.

These trial transcripts were created as a result of the Civil Rights Division’s 1967 prosecution of individuals charged with the violation of the civil rights of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in the United States v. Price, et al. (also known as the “Mississippi Burning” incident).

On June 21, 1964, several individuals conspired to murder civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Philadelphia, Mississippi, one day after the three had arrived in Mississippi to assist in efforts to register African-American voters. Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price approached the civil rights workers while they changed a tire on the car by the side of the road. The Deputy Sheriff alleged that the car had been speeding, arrested the workers, and placed them all in jail – holding the two passengers for “investigation.” Deputy Sheriff Price fined the car’s driver James Chaney $20.00 and then released the trio at 10:00 P.M. ordering them to leave Neshoba County. Deputy Sheriff Price escorted the civil rights workers to the edge of town on the road towards Meridian, Mississippi. The civil rights workers never arrived in Meridian. On June 23, 1964, on information provided by residents of a nearby Choctaw community, Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found the charred remains of the civil rights workers’ Ford station wagon eighty feet off the highway on an abandoned logging track. After an extensive investigation in which the FBI offered a reward for locating the victims, on August 4, 1964, investigators discovered all three civil rights workers’ bodies buried in an earthen dam on a farm six miles southwest of Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Chicago Tribune

Survivor: `It Really Hit You -an Utter Mess Of Bodies`

July 20, 1989 By Rogers Worthington, Chicago Tribune. Tribune reporters Jean Latz Griffin in Chicago and Jessica Seigel in Denver and Sioux City Journal reporter Harvey Sanford contributed to this report.

SIOUX CITY, IA. — Robert Manz walked dazed through smoke and fire into a cornfield, then turned around.

``We didn`t realize how bad the loss of life was until we walked to the open area, and that`s when it really hit you-an utter mess of bodies and debris,`` said Manz, of Tiffin, Ohio, one of the passengers who survived the crash of the crippled United Airlines DC-10 jetliner here.

Manz and others aboard the plane sat stunned at a dormitory at Briar Cliff College and talked about the final terrifying minutes of the flight and the destruction they saw when they realized they were on the ground, alive.

Tom Postle, a credit manager from Newark, Ohio, said the first sign of trouble was a huge explosion 45 minutes out of Denver.

``We took a dive,`` he said. ``Then the captain came on and told us the No. 2 engine was gone and we`d be about a half hour late getting into Chicago.``

But 15 minutes later, Postle said, the captain spoke to the passengers again on the intercom, saying that flight attendants would instruct them about bracing for a crash.

As the plane headed for ground, Postle said the aircraft was weaving horizontally, and the wings were rolling.

``I knew if we got on the ground, chances were good that he would touch down on a wing tip,`` he said.

Suddenly, the captain yelled over the intercom, ``Brace! Brace! Brace!``

Postle said.

``We hit the ground very hard. We expected it to bounce back up, but it didn`t. Then we felt air and dust, and we couldn`t see. We were stopped before I realized we were upside down.``

Manz said he ``felt a really severe jolt. We came out of the ankle grab position, then there was a second jolt, and we lost all concept of direction. We didn`t know if we were end over end or sideways or what.``

Through fire, Postle said, he saw daylight at both ends of the fuselage. He helped two women outside before he realized he was bleeding profusely from a head wound, for which he received 27 stitches.

Martha Vazquez, of Elida, Ohio, who was with Manz on the aircraft returning from a business trip to Denver, said: ``You knew you had to get out of there fast. You just knew you had to keep running before something exploded.``

Another passenger, Charles Martz, of Denver, remembers saying to himself: ``This was going to be the one that bought the ranch.``

But Martz, who also is a pilot, said: ``That pilot did a hell of a job. He saved my life. He did a super job of controlling the plane as best he could.``

After the plane crashed and broke into three pieces, Martz said, he was upside down, and he unfastened his seat belt.

``I dropped a little way and discovered bodies all over the place,``

Martz said.

GRAND PRIX RESULTS: MONACO GP, 1991

Monaco GP

Monte Carlo

May 12, 1991

78 Laps, 3.328 km

There was no change to the entry at Monaco and no change on pole position with Ayrton Senna fastest in his McLaren-Honda. There was a surprise in second place with the Pirelli-shod Tyrrell-Honda of Stefano Modena ahead of Riccardo Patrese's Williams-Renault, Nelson Piquet's Benetton-Ford, Nigel Mansell (Williams), Gerhard Berger (McLaren) and the Ferrari of Alain Prost. The top 10 was rounded off by the Benetton of Roberto Moreno, Jean Alesi's Ferrari and Andrea de Cesaris in his Jordan.

Modena made a good start but Senna took the lead with Modena second ahead of Patrese, Mansell and Prost. Berger ran into Piquet at the first corner and Piquet was out. Berger would disappear soon afterwards. After stopping for repairs he was charging back when he hit the wall in the Swimming Pool area while trying to wipe his visor. Modena suffered badly from traffic and so fell back to Patrese. Pierluigi Martini was the cause and he became the first man in F1 history to get a 10-second stop-go penalty, which meant going into the pits and waiting 10 seconds before being allowed back onto the track.

On lap 30 Prost overtook Mansell for fourth place but otherwise the order was stable until lap 43 when Modena's engine blew up in the tunnel. Patrese hit the oil and spun wildly. This left Senna with a huge advantage over Prost with Mansell, his engine problem suddenly curing itself, beginning to charge. Alesi continued his lonely race in fourth and Moreno did the same in fifth.

On lap 63 Mansell dived ahead of Prost with a wild manoeuvre but Prost was smart enough to keep out of the way of the errant Williams. Prost's race was ruined when he had to pit to have a wheel tightened and so he finished fifth behind Senna

Is george bush gay

Other Answers

George W Bush is gay.

He had male prostitute James Guckert visit the White House over 200 times while president between 2003 and 2005.

Bush had a number of bisexual relations with Victor Ashe in 1984 and subsequently made Ashe ambassador to Poland.

Bush's alleged homosexuality in college was hinted at in Kitty Kelley's massive biography of the Bush family, The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty, which was released at about the same time as CBS 60 Minutes was investigating Bush's National Guard stint. In the case of Kelley's book and the gay charge, the criticism came not from the GOP operatives but from their allies in the corporate media, including the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz, who is married to a GOP operative. While Bush attended all-boys Andover prep school (nicknamed "bend over"), Bush, not able to make it as an athlete, instead became a male cheerleader. At Yale, Bush, according to Kelley, had a "special relationship" (i.e., gay relationship) with Victor Ashe, his room mate and fellow cheerleader. Ashe, a former Mayor of Knoxville, is now Bush's ambassador to Poland. At the Delta Kappa Epsilon frat house, Bush became known as "a jock sniffer."
