USS George Washington (SSBN-598), the lead ship of her class of nuclear ballistic missile submarines, was the third United States Navy ship of the name, in honor of George Washington (1732–1799), first President of the United States, and the first of that name to be purpose-built as a warship.
Final patrol as ballistic missile submarine and operations as attack submarine
In 1982, George Washington returned to Pearl Harbor from her last missile patrol. In 1983, her missiles were unloaded at Bangor, Washington to comply with the SALT I treaty.
The "Georgefish" — her nickname — made 55 deterrent patrols in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in her 25-year career.
Service as an attack submarine
George Washington continued service as an attack submarine (SSN), returning briefly to Pearl Harbor. In 1983 she departed Pearl Harbor for the last time and transited the Panama Canal back to the Atlantic and to New London.
Decommissioning
George Washington was decommissioned on 24 January 1985, stricken from the Naval Vessel Registry on 30 April 1986, and scheduled for disposal through the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Recycling of the ship was completed on 30 September 1998.

Insecure divorcee Helen Stewart goes sailing with her extremely critical and overbearing mother. Near the end of the day Helen believes she sees a man in a bathrobe shoot another man in an upstairs window visible from the boat. She isn't completely sure because the setting sun has slightly obscured her vision. Neither her mother or the police believe her story. The house she was looking at belongs to retired General Hollister, a well-known and loved war hero.
In fact, Hollister did have a visitor in uniform, a Col. Roger Dutton who was there to tell Hollister that he was tired of the scam he and Hollister were running with government contracts awarded to Hollister's construction company. Dutton says he is going to go AWOL rather than have his part in the scheme exposed by an audit the inspector general was about to begin on the cost overruns. Hollister won't let Dutton run off and leave him exposed, so he picks up his favorite gun, a pearl-handled .45 and shoots Dutton.This gun has never let him down in battle, and once again it saves him.
Columbo has been called in to check out Helen's story of a murder. Because Hollister is so well-known the police decide Columbo is the man to deal with regarding Helen's far-fetched story. When Columbo arrives, two cadets are packing up some crates which the General explains are his war trophies and souvenirs, which are going to a special exhibit at the Marine Military Institute. Hollister invites Columbo to look anywhere he wishes, while he finishes dressing for a testimonial dinner to be held in his honor. When Columbo asks to see the famous pearl-handled revolver, Hollister admits it was stolen from him in Korea and he only has a duplicate which was made for the exhibit.
Columbo lets on that he is there because of a witness concern about what she saw and this worries Hollister. A witness? That could be bad for him. He discovers Helen's identity and goes to the apartment she shares with her mother. He charms her mother and eventually Helen and he begins to date Helen. He spots her insecurity and uses his charm to persuade her that he is an honest man and that she couldn't possibly have seen him shoot anyone. He easily convinces her that she was completely mistaken.
Then Dutton's body is found in the water and Columbo continues to investigate the General. He goes for a boat ride with Hollister, for that discussion where Columbo tells the General he suspects him and why. Hollister denies all of his allegation and does his best to get Columbo seasick. Hollister says he expects a man named Columbo to be more at home on a boat. Columbo's reply "It must have been another branch of the family, sir."
A stop at his favorite chili place gives Columbo some ideas about men and their war trophies. He can't stop thinking about that gun. He asks Helen to meet him at the Hollister exhibit and he begins to explain his theory, pointing out the pearl-handled gun in a case. Hollister shows up. How could a military man who saved so many crates full of mementos of his career have let his trademark gun be stolen? He begins to question whether the duplicate is not really the original after all. Any other killer would have disposed of a murder weapon before it could be discovered and tested, but Hollister would never get rid of a gun with so much sentimental meaning. He even believes the General's huge ego would lead him to put the murder weapon on display, secretly gloating over his victory. He tells Hollister that he can prove the display gun is the murder weapon with a ballistics test. Hollister apologizes to Helen as he is led away by police.
