U.S. Astronaut Felt Isolated Aboard Mir Space Station

HOUSTON - In a revealing look at some of the human challenges of international space flight, NASA astronaut Norman Thagard said yesterday that he felt culturally isolated aboard the Russian space station Mir and might have found it difficult to remain in orbit much longer.

"My impression is that psychological aspects probably loom largest," Thagard said. "I think anybody can do three months or four months as I'm doing. . . . Six months and longer is a different matter entirely."

Thagard, who was in his 111th day in orbit, spoke at a news conference involving the 10 people aboard the joined Atlantis and Mir spacecraft. He said he got along fine with Mir crewmates Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov.

But, he added, "For the American on board a Russian space station, you are the only English speaker on board, in general. The cultural isolation is extreme. There were times when I went 72 hours without speaking to an English-speaking person. I didn't get a lot of news up here. All of those things start to weigh heavily after a while. . . . If I'd been looking at six months I would have been really worried at about three months that I wasn't going to make it."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration needs to do more study on the interaction of crew members, Thagard said, as the United States and Russia prepare to assemble a multinational space station in orbit starting in 1997.

"It's something that NASA's still looking at, something we better look at because we propose to put people on spacecraft in relative isolation for six months or even a year," said Thagard, a physician who turned 52 yesterday.

A few hours after the news conference, the crew members held a farewell ceremony and closed the hatches between the two spacecraft. Atlantis was scheduled to undock from Mir at about 4:10 this morning

and land in Florida Friday.

Atlantis' five-day docking with Mir reunited Thagard with fellow English speakers for the first time since mid-March.

Asked what he now would bring along on Mir if he had a choice, Thagard responded, "Well, if I could have brought my wife along I probably would have done that."

Fields would say I'd rather be here then in Philadelphia. Fifty-four degrees on a slightly overcast day. Weatherman said rain. If you get paid that kind of money for being wrong sixty percent of the time it beat working. My mileage is 79,345. Gauge is on reserve. Riding on fumes here. I've got to tank up when I get into town. Remind me to tell you how much that is. Lunch was ... uhh ... (retrieves a receipt from his pocket) six dollars and thirty-one cents at the ... Lamplighter Inn, that's on highway two near Lewis Fork. That was a tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat, slice of cherry pie and a cup of coffee. (emphasized) Damn good food. Diane, if you ever get up this way that cherry pie is worth a stop. Okay. (picks up card) Looks like I'll be meeting up with a ahh ... Sheriff Harry S. Truman. Shouldn't be to hard to remember that.

Truman as they investigate the death of popular high school student Laura Palmer; Cooper believes the murder has connections to a murder case that occurred a year earlier.

Cooper believes there is a connection between Laura's death and the death of another girl named Theresa Banks that happened a year earlier. Cooper discovers a small piece of paper with the letter "R" on it shoved under Laura's fingernail.
